- A controversial shopping center development was approved by the Placer County Board of Supervisors for the southeast corner of Walerga and Baseline roads near Roseville. The project, known as the Baseline Commercial Center, was opposed by many of the residents adjacent to the site due to concerns about the possible increase in noise, traffic and crime the center might bring. The lot slated for the shopping center required a zoning change from rural low-density residential to commercial use. (Newsbreak)
- The Magic Kingdom just got way more affordable for California residents. Disneyland's new discount program offers tickets for $83, instead of the usual $249, per person with proof of residence in California or Northern Baja California. There are some caveats, such as having to buy the tickets in three-day increments, but the tickets can be spread out over three separate visits. (KCRA)
- Less than one month after California's economy reopened and COVID-19 guidelines were relaxed, an outbreak has the state capitol reinstating some of those rules. Nine government workers at the capitol tested positive for COVID last week, initiating the return of mandatory facemasks and twice-weekly testing for those working in the building. Four of the infected were fully vaccinated and seven were employed in the same office. State COVID-19 labor rules require immediate action when there are more than three cases reported within 14 days at a workplace. (SacBee)
- Tech-savvy pranksters have found a new outlet for their, ahem, creativity - electronic road signs. One sign in Sacramento near a levee repair site initially read “Garden Highway closed,” but was hacked overnight, displaying “Happy 4th F——!” to motorists driving by. The sign has been changed back. - Folsom’s Harris Center, a popular venue for live entertainment in our region, is planning for a "soft re-opening" around October 1, even as other local venues rush to fill the void left by the pandemic. The pause will allow the center to restructure its management model, a task anticipated before COVID. It will also allow the center to raise needed funds for the reopening. A live outdoor concert, which will serve as a fundraiser, featuring singer Bucky Heard and veteran guitarist John Wedemeyer, is set to take place in the Harris Center parking lot on August 21.
