- The empty building on Taylor Road that once housed Islands Fine Burgers & Drinks may have a new restaurant opening in the next six months. Bay Boys Bar & Grill plans to serve up "a lot of finger foods and traditional pub offerings, just brought to a different level," according to co-owner Max Tolstoguzov. After serving lunch and dinner, the space will become a lounge with live music and dancing. (Subscription: Sacramento Business Journal)
- Our state is known for being on the cutting edge - perhaps that Gold Rush pioneering spirit continues to live on? Even our professional sports teams are making history, as happened Tuesday night when our San Francisco Giants became the first team in Major League Baseball history to field a female coach. Assistant coach Alyssa Nakken, who works mostly with baserunning and outfield defense, was called in to coach first base in the third inning after the team’s regular first base coach, Antoan Richardson, was ejected from the game for a contentious verbal exchange with the San Diego Padres’ third base coach. The Giants went on to win 13-2 and Nakken’s helmet is already on its way to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Fun fact: Nakken was a former softball star at our own Sacramento State University. (ESPN)
- Dennis Henry Lynch entered “not guilty” pleas to two counts of murder in the stabbing deaths of Loomis residents Kathy Lynch and Gerald Upholt Wednesday at his arraignment. According to Ed Gilbert, the owner of EWG Guns in Loomis, the 19-year-old suspect attempted to purchase a firearm at the store in the days before the murders. Gilbert refused to sell to Lynch and called law enforcement shortly after Lynch left the store. “He left me with an uneasy feeling,” Gilbert said. - The California Air Resources Board is speeding into a greener future with a recently released proposal to triple zero-emission vehicle sales in California over the next four years. Part of the aggressive plan is to completely phase out the sale of gasoline-powered cars by 2035. Zero-emission vehicles include those powered by battery, hydrogen or electricity. The plan will be subjected to a months-long state review process and will require approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. (KCRA 3)
