RHS Centennial Celebration

The big day is arriving!  Or more accurately, the big weekend is arriving, and it is starting today!  The Roseville community is encouraged to join in the festivities as we celebrate and recognize the 100^th anniversary of Roseville High School and the Roseville Joint Union High School District.  To recap, this is the schedule of events for the weekend.

Friday, September 14^th

• Homecoming Parade, 2PM, Starts at Woodbridge Park, Sierra Blvd
• Floats, Music, Antique Cars
• Varsity Homecoming Game – Roseville vs. Oakmont
• Infield parade and Homecoming Court coronation ceremonies start at 6:30pm.
• RHS band performs at halftime
• Fireworks display after the game!!

Sunday, September 16th

• Roseville High School, Open Campus Day
  • 10am - 1pm
  • Campus tours, music, student displays and exhibits
• Centennial Picnic
  • Woodbridge Park, Sierra Blvd
  • 11am – 4pm
  • Social Time, Music, Food, Fun!!

On Sunday, there is a wide variety of musical entertainment being presented to the community.  It starts at Roseville High School at 10am.  The Discords, a barbershop quartet style singing group made up of RHS alumni will kick the day off by singing in the JB Gale Auditorium on the RHS campus.  Always having a joy of singing, but also feeling the realities of life, of raising children, tending to home and work responsibilities, many years went by without the group singing together.  And then by chance, the Discords met in Las Vegas for an event, and for fun, they sang together and for a small crowd.  They loved it!  And so did the crowd!  After thinking about it for a few minutes, they decided singing together was so much fun, they must do it more regularly.  And so – the Discords became a group, and they have been charming audiences for many years.  If you are near the high school, please stop by the JB Gale Auditorium and listen to them sing.   

Also playing at the high school will be a variety of student and alumni musicians.

And right down the street at Woodbridge Park, there is more activity!  The musical entertainment starts slightly after 11am with the sounds of the Roseville Community Concert Band, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, an all-volunteer symphonic band that performs throughout the greater Roseville and South Placer communities. The RCCB was established in 2000 by Bill Hastings, a retired director of U.S. Navy and Coast Guard Bands. In July of 2007, Stephanie Sugano was appointed as the next conductor and musical director of the band. Beginning with only 15 musicians, the band has grown to over 40 active members. The RCCB sponsors a week long Youth Music Camp offering a variety of musical instruction to children from 5th to 8th grade.   Their Music Camp has been generously supported by a grant from the City of Roseville, Citizen's Benefit Fund and attracts many young musicians and beginners from the surrounding area.

Starting slightly after noon and offering a change of musical pace, the Night Shift Band will play.  These alumni band members have known each other since they were little tykes.  They graduated from RHS in the 1972 era.  They’ve been friends for a long time and back in their day, they played extensively around the area.  Recently, and especially for this event, they’ve decided it was time to dust off the guitars, drums and microphones and get back to doing what they love – playing good old classic rock n roll.  One of the band members, Rudy Guerro is not able to play with the band on Sunday.  The band members playing are Thom Cervantes, Joe Jiminez, Bruce Long and filling in for Rudy is Bruce Boles.

And because everyone has their own taste in music, there will be a shift in genre, ending the musical portion of the day with the Prophecy Band, a well-known band in the Sacramento and surrounding area.  The group has been playing together for about the last 10 years.  A band from Sacramento, California that has roots deeply engrained in jazz, R&B, funk and classic songs from the past and present.  The current lineup includes original member lead guitarist, Darryl Goodwin; lead vocalist Avis Walker; drummer Diondre Williams; Bass Daryl Singh, Keyboad player Carlos Jones and Congas/Percussionist, Mack. The group released its debut CD in 2005 entitled Reflections and is currently working on new material for their follow up CD. Leader of the Band, Tony Kenner recently released his solo debut CD, Journey Through Life. 

In addition to listening to the variety of music, you are invited to bring a picnic lunch, a lawn chair or blanket and join us.  Parking around Woodbridge Park is very limited so all are encouraged to park in one of the Roseville High School parking lots.

George Carreras, a RHS alumnus, will have his BBQ fired up and will be serving a New York Strip lunch with sides for $10.  He will also have kabobs available.  Also onsite will be Noodles & Company and Nothing Bundt Cakes, both of which will be providing free food samples.

Fifteen of the Boulevard Banners hanging on Vernon Street will be raffled off.  Tickets are 6 for $5 and can be purchased at the Merchandise Table at the Freshman/JV game on Thursday night, the Varsity Homecoming game on Friday night, and at both the school and the park on Sunday.  The raffle drawing will occur between 1:30pm and 2:00pm on Sunday.   You do not need to be present to win.  The banners will be given to the winners in November when the banners are removed.
