Back to School Safety / Police Awareness Academy

The beginning of the school year is an exciting time for students.  They get to see old friends, make new ones, and meet their new teacher.  This excitement often makes children forget safety rules and precautions.  That’s why it is important for parents to make talking with their children about safety a top priority.

Here are a few tips to keep kids safe as they return to school:

• Teach your children to always take a friend with them when walking or biking, and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop.
• Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes them feel scared or feel uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person.  Teach them it is okay to not be polite and say it is okay to say NO.
• Teach your children if someone tries to take them somewhere they should resist by kicking and screaming, “This person is trying to take me away!” or “This person is not my mother/father.”
• Teach your children NOT TO ACCEPT RIDES from anyone unless you have said it is okay in that instance.  If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction, and run to a trusted adult who may help them.
• Teach children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS  from anyone unless you have told them it is okay in that instance.

And for our former kids, the Roseville Police Department is now accepting applications from Roseville community members for Citizen's Police Awareness Academy.  The academy will be from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from September 17-27, 2012.

Citizen's Police Awareness Academy provides community members with an inside look at local law enforcement.  During the academy, students will be introduced to the concepts of community oriented policing and problem solving, learn about volunteer opportunities, and will meet representatives from the investigation unit, the SWAT Team, the K9 unit, and more.

Roseville's Citizen Police Academy is open to those who are at least 18 years old and who live or work in the Roseville area.
