Here are the top stories in Roseville today:

  1. Scammers are out in force in Roseville these days - and they are after your credit and debit card numbers. Police have found seven card skimming devices, realistic looking overlays on legitimate point-of-sale (POS) devices that steal card numbers, in Roseville since May. Click on the links to find out how to spot skimmers before they take your bank account on a shopping spree. (ABC 10 and PCmag.com)
  2. A large fire, caused by a propane explosion, engulfed a homeless camp and damaged two bridges over Roseville Road in Sacramento around 12:45 am yesterday morning. Light rail service was halted while engineers inspected damage to the tracks on one bridge, then resumed later for the morning commute. Inspection will continue to determine long-term damage. The homeless camp was completely destroyed, displacing the estimated 40 people living there. (KCRA 3)
  3. Local songwriter and musician Katie Fry of Rocklin channeled her pain and grief over losing her home to a wildfire last year into a heartfelt musical tribute to her upbringing in Northern California. For Fry, music is not only personally therapeutic. She shares its healing power, and her gifts, at the bedside of hospice patients and people in memory care as a Certified Music Practitioner. Check out a great interview with this talented local gal. (Roseville Today)
  4. If you are heading into the Sierra today (as I am), be aware that forecasted thunder and lighting storms have Cal Fire to issuing a Fire Weather Watch through tomorrow. Similar storms in August 2020 sparked over 700 wildfires in the Sierra in just a handful of days. The U.S. Forest Service cautions awareness and vigilance as "conditions can change quickly." (USDA Forest Service Twitter and Cal Fire Twitter)
  5. Low staffing and a spike in COVID-19 hospitalizations in Placer County that exceeds last winter's peak have caused a tremendous strain on area respiratory therapy departments and other medical services. Kaiser Permanente noted that nearly a third of the patients in their Roseville hospital have COVID-19, and 90% of them are unvaccinated. The strain is spilling over into other medical services in the hospital as beds are doubled up in the intensive care unit and patients are sent home to recuperate instead of to rehabilitation facilities. (ABC 10)
