Here are the top stories today in Roseville:

  1. It’s been a while since we checked in on Roseville’s Commercial Corridors Project. Over the past few months, our intrepid city leaders have asked for public input to “reimagine” some of our town’s busiest commercial areas. Well, the first draft maps of each Specific Plan have come out and are online for public review and comment. Be engaged with your community and add your insight to this process that will affect life in Roseville for many years to come! (City of Roseville Press Release)
  2. A proposal for a homeless shelter on Cincinnati Avenue in Rocklin has residents in the surrounding areas gathering signatures on a petition to oppose it, even though the proposal has not been brought before any official government entities as yet. So far, The Gathering Inn, a local nonprofit in Roseville serving the homeless, has created a digital rendering of the proposed Campus of Hope that it hopes to locate on 16 acres in the industrial area near the Santucci Justice Center. While the address is considered in Rocklin, it is technically in an unincorporated area of Placer County. A feasibility study conducted by Placer County in 2016 checked for any flaws with the property, basically clearing it for use by a possible future shelter. City and county officials have insisted that any plan to move forward with the Campus of Hope will be "a very public process" where constituents' concerns would be heard. (ABC 10)
  3. As California reinstates statewide, temporary COVID-19 masking mandates to combat a 48% rise in infection rates since Thanksgiving, data coming out of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show a 58.8% decline in recorded cases for Placer County in the December 6-12 period, compared to the previous week. While that news is heartening, Placer County’s current case rate of 56.74 infections per 100,000 people still places us squarely in the “substantial” category for transmission risk. Explore other national, state and county COVID data and how the CDC determines transmission levels in this article. (Roseville Patch)
  4. Placer County has seen an increase in the number of fentanyl-related overdose deaths over the past three years, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner Division. The trend is alarming as the dangerous drug is being used to “cut” other street drugs, often without the purchaser’s knowledge. Fentanyl can be up to 100 times more powerful than heroin and morphine, with only an infinitesimal amount needed to be fatal. (Gold Country Media)
  5. After the past two dry, blazing (literally) summers, Northern Californians are rejoicing over Monday’s atmospheric river storm (Sacramento set a record for daily rainfall going back to 1915). And, after a brief timeout yesterday, there’s more in store for today! But don’t abandon your water-conserving ways just yet, folks. We still have a long way to go to get our snowpack and vital reservoirs back up to sustainable levels. Our friends at Roseville Today have the status report, as of yesterday, to put things into perspective for you. (Roseville Today)

  • Our Roseville Police need your help to track down a red Pontiac Fiero that went missing from a parking lot on Douglas Boulevard, across the street from Target in Roseville. • The Sierra is a winter wonderland right now with all the snow from the current storm system, but our South Lake Tahoe CHP wants you to know that all that sudden snowfall has created “havoc” on just about all the major roadways.
