Get out your cozy sweaters, my friends. The expected high today is a brisk 68 degrees! Tonight's low will be an even brisker 50. Winds should pick a bit; somewhere in the 5-15 mph range. Humidity's looking a little higher at about 69% during the day.

Here are the top stories in Roseville today:

  1. One of the things I love about living in Roseville is that it is a giving community. The City of Roseville recently received the Operation School Bell Award from the National Assistance League for its significant support to the program which provides school clothing and shoes to thousands of children in need in Greater Placer County. The award was presented to Roseville City Manager Dominick Casey by Vicki Harris, the Operation School Bell Chair for the Assistance League of Greater Placer County. (Press Release)
  2. Roseville’s biggest NASCAR event, the ARCA Manards West Series, hits the track at the All American Speedway on Saturday. Drivers and promoters are revved up to have fans back in stands after competing last year in an empty venue due to the pandemic. Cole Moore of Granite Bay is poised to take on series frontrunner and teammate Jesse Love. That should keep fans' hearts … racing! (KCRA 3)
  3. It’s not often we get to hear positive stories coming from a prison, but this one comes from right next door in Folsom. Jeff Snoozy, Prison Industries supervisor for the California Prison Authority, recently suffered a heart-related emergency while overseeing operations in the Braille Program at Folsom State Prison. Completely incapacitated, Snoozy was aided by two of the incarcerated persons in the program, one a former nursing assistant and paramedic. “I am very grateful to the incarcerated individuals that came to my aid. Digital Services is very remote and without their help, there is a good chance that I would not be here today,” said Snoozy. “I’m lucky they responded and I’m lucky they were there.” (Gold Country Media)
  4. Although COVID-19 cases seem to be decreasing in Placer County, it is sobering to note that hospitalizations and ICU intakes were double last year’s pandemic spike. The numbers speak to just how highly contagious the delta variant is compared to last year’s strain. The seven-day average case rate is now 18.5 per 100,000 people in Placer County, with an increase expected in the coming months as people gather for the holidays. (ABC 10)

Today in Roseville:

  • If the last two summers have taught us anything, it’s that lawns are going to have a rough go of it in California for a while. Thinking of replacing your water-starved lawn with something a little lower maintenance? Tune in to this free webinar on Lawn Removal offered by the Roseville Utility Exploration Center. noon-12:30pm
  • Tonight is going to be caliente at Cantina Laredo in the Galleria! Besides their always awesome eats, they’re having music and salsa dance lessons out under the stars. Bring you appetite and your dancing shoes! 8:30pm-12:00am
  • If you like your Friday night a little more chill, Crossing Autumn is playing an acoustic set of their original music and cover songs at The Fig Tree Coffee, Art & Music Lounge. An appropriately named band for what promises to be a perfect Autumn night! 6:00pm
  • Take a cult classic series of slasher movies, add a Broadway soundtrack and put it on at an intimate local theatre (complete with a “splatter zone” – I don’t even want to know …) and you have a night of crazy ridiculous fun! Evil Dead: The Musical at the Sutter Street Theatre in Folsom promises cheesy jokes, worse effects and lots of (hopefully fake) blood beginning tonight. Weekends through Oct. 31
  • Load the young’uns in the wagon and take a trip to a bygone era at the Coloma Gold Rush Live 2021 this weekend. Actors will help you experience what the 49ers (not the football team) experienced as you register your claim and go through a typical "day in the life," searching for gold in them thar hills. Entry to the event is $5 per car. Parking is an additional $10. Through Sunday 10:00am-4:00pm

Roseville Patch Notebook:

  • Do you and your pet have what it takes to take on the Placer SPCA’s “Pets are Family” 24-Hour Photo Challenge? Start stretching now and dust off that camera lens as the competition is expected to be … well, feral. Your $25-$35 entry fee goes to support the good work the PSPCA does for animals in our community. Challenge accepted! (Facebook)
  • Clear some space on your bookshelf today for the 2nd Saturday Book Sale tomorrow at the Granite Bay Library. Or better yet, buy an additional bookcase! The early bird gets the best selection, and all proceeds benefit the library. (Instagram)
  • Congratulations to the Information Technology Team at the Placer County Office of Education! The team scored in the top 3% of the state in cyber security. (Twitter)
  • Capt. James T. Kirk is finally going to “the final frontier” for real on Jeff BezosBlue Origin rocket, according to the BBC. Or at least the actor who plays him, William Shatner, is. At 90 years old, Shatner will be the oldest person to travel into space. However, he will not be the first Star Trek cast member to leave Earth. The ashes of James “Scotty” Doohan were smuggled aboard the International Space Station in 2008. Yes, you read that correctly. (Facebook)
