Here are the top five stories today in Roseville:

  1. Roseville is getting closer to having a new electoral district map after the Independent Redistricting Commission decided to move forward with map B-1 at their last meeting. Roseville residents have 30 days to comment on the map at several meetings scheduled around town over the next few weeks. The meeting schedule is out - make sure your voice is heard! Once a new map is adopted, it will be in place for the next ten years. Check out the draft map up for consideration in this article. (ABC 10)
  2. The City of Roseville is looking at a $28.5 million surplus in the General Fund and considering if some of the money should be used to address three major issues in our city. A proposal to amend the 2021-2022 fiscal year budget to spend $5.4 million of the surplus on resurfacing ($4.4 million), replacing a Roseville Fire Department tractor-drawn aerial fire truck ($700,000) and to restore money taken from city’s General Fund Administrative Contingency ($300,000) to complete the Roseville Aquatic Center improvements. The City Council will revisit the proposal at the Council Priorities Workshop scheduled for February 22nd and 23rd.(Roseville Press Tribune)
  3. Four local teens and a representative from the Roseville chapter of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) addressed the Roseville City Council at its January 19th meeting to express concerns about comments made by Pieter Friedrich about the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh at the December 15th, 2021, meeting. Friedrich, an author and public speaker on South Asian affairs, had made comments connecting the HSS with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), warning the council that the HSS was “the international wing to the most xenophobic and genocidal organization in India.” Friedrich’s comments were in response to a city proclamation recognizing the HSS in November 2021. Supporters of the HSS characterized the organization as U.S.-based volunteer nonprofit emphasizing social, educational and cultural development. (Gold Country Media)
  4. On the heels of Placer County Sherriff Devon Bell’s retirement announcement on Thursday, Undersheriff Wayne Woo announced his intention Thursday to run for Sheriff in the next elections. Undersheriff Woo has worked for the Placer County Sheriff’s Office for 28 years, serving as Undersheriff since 2017. (Current) Sheriff Bell will retire at the end of the year due to a medical condition. (Press release and Facebook)

  • It’s not really local news (unless you count that there are a lot of fans of the movie “Dirty Dancing” in Roseville), but I couldn’t resist telling you all about this opportunity. You can “have the time of your life” reliving iconic scenes from the movie at the Virginia lodge where filming took place; including the restaurant where Baby and Johnny first met, Baby’s cabin and the gazebo where the dance lessons took place. During their “Dirty Dancing Weekends” the Mountain Lake Lodge is offing guided tours, dance lessons and other fun activities inspired from the film. (FOX 40)
