Here are the top five stories today in Roseville:
- Tuesday was the first day of fireworks sales for "Safe and Sane" products in California. Non-profits sell these fireworks year after year to raise funds for their causes (for instance, see my notebook entry about where Roseville Lions and Rotary are selling this year!), and, year after year there are lines to buy these sparkling beauties. But this year, you may have to shell out a bit more of your hard earned cash to help these causes. A pack of fireworks one shopper said cost her $49.99 last year is now going for $89.99! Shaun Morrow, who runs a fireworks stand for the Rotary Club of West Sacramento, attributes the increase to a rise in prices across the board due to inflation. So, team up with you neighbors this year, make it a block party and pool your resources. The 4th of July fireworks show must go on! (KCRA3)
- If you're looking for a fireworks show on a grander scale, try the 4th of July Fireworks @the Grounds in Roseville. Admission is free and gates will open earlier this year at 4 p.m. Food concessions and children’s activities will be available. Guests are invited to bring blankets and chairs. (Roseville Today)
- Dr. Karen Davis O’Hara has been named the new executive dean of the Sierra College Nevada County Campus. O’Hara comes to Sierra College after more than 20 years at Sac State. “I grew up in Alaska, came to this area to attend UC Davis, and never left,” she said. “Last year, our family moved to Grass Valley in search of an experience like I had in Alaska. We’ve found that here, and with Sierra College, I’ve found an amazing way to serve the community.” (The Union)
- Head out to McBean Park for Lincoln's 4th of July parade, fireworks and family fun day! They'll be partying all day from a pancake breakfast starting at 7 a.m. through fireworks that are set to get underway after the softball game against Walnut Creek. (Roseville Today)
- U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Tyler Vargas-Andrews a Folsom native, was injured in a deadly suicide bombing at the Kabul Airport while serving in Afghanistan last year. He lost his entire left leg, his right arm just above the elbow, and suffered several other injuries. He will be honored at the Folsom Pro Rodeo on Sunday, along with the 13 service members who lost their lives that day, the family members of those killed, those who helped save Vargas-Andrews’ life, and those who survived the bombing in Kabul.
