At about 4 a.m. on Dec. 12, our officers arrested two men on suspicion of possessing falsified Visa gift cards. The Visa cards had been altered, with stolen credit card numbers embossed over their originally issued numbers.
Such falsified gift cards are usually used like this: When suspects present an altered gift cards to a store clerk to make a purchase, they'll tell the clerk the magnetic stripe doesn't work, and ask the clerk to instead manually enter the card number. A victim's stolen credit card number is then charged for the purchase.
Retail clerks should be alert for this scam and verify suspicious gift cards with the issuing companies, and then notify the police department or their loss prevention department immediately if the card is fraudulent.
