First, today's weather:

Brrrrrr! It looks like we’ll be ending 2021 on a cold, dry note. The morning will be partly cloudy, but we should have some sunshine this afternoon. The expected high is 49 degrees, and we will get below freezing tonight with an overnight low of 30. Winds will be in the 5-10 mph range and humidity will be high at around 85% during the day.

Cover your delicate landscaping and wrap those water pipes tonight!

Here are the top five stories today in Roseville:

  1. A coordinated effort by our Roseville Police, students and staff at Diamond Creek Elementary School, Roseville residents and our local chapter of Toys for Tots collected enough toys to make a merry Christmas for children in five of the city’s income qualified apartment complexes. The community spirit here is one of the things that makes Roseville a great place to live! Read on for more details! (City of Roseville Press Release and Roseville Police Facebook)
  2. Fitness enthusiasts have a new spot to work off all that holiday over-indulgence with the opening of a Planet Fitness at suite 100 in Roseville Square. The growing company has enjoyed great popularity in the Sacramento region with its low membership and “judgement free zone” vibe. (Roseville Today and subscription: Sacramento Business Journal)
  3. La Huaca, Roseville’s go-to spot for Peruvian cuisine, is expanding by moving to a larger space in the TJ Maxx Plaza on Douglas Boulevard (into the former Sizzler building). It will announce its grand opening soon. (Facebook and subscription: Sacramento Business Journal)
  4. I don’t know about you, but brunch is my favorite meal. So I was pretty jazzed to run across this article, Rise & Dine: 25+ Best Brunch Spots in Roseville, Folsom & the Foothills, in Style Magazine. Now if only we could make brunch an everyday event … who’s with me? (Style Magazine)
  5. These past few winter storms have been great for our poor, water-starved state, but they sure did wreak havoc on the roadways over the Sierra. An abundance of ill-prepared motorists caused numerous collisions and backups on I-80, US-50 and other highways over the past week. Yikes! Did you know that Placer County has a Ready Placer dashboard, complete with traffic cameras, to keep travelers informed on changing road conditions around the county? Be sure to check it out before your next trip into snow country. (Placer County website)

From my notebook:

  • Thanks to a coin drive held by Jordyn and Sarah, students from Roseville High School, our Placer SPCA now has $600 more to spend on the critters it cares for. The drive was part of a passion project for the girls’ English 9 class. Well done, ladies! (Instagram)
  • Pieology in Roseville is making it easier for you to take their pizza goodness on the go with its new Pie-Rittos. These handheld, burrito-shaped innovations come in four flavors: Classic Italian, BBQ Chicken, Western BBQ and Pesto Veggie. But they are here for only a limited time, so get over there soon! (Press Release)
  • Your middle- and high-schoolers could win cash prizes and the chance to be featured in a local theater public service announcement by entering the Water Spots Video Contest sponsored by our Regional Water Authority and local water providers. And teachers can win a $100 Amazon gift card for sponsoring the most students. Check out the details! (Be Water Smart)
  • When Metallica rocked Sacramento in October at the Aftershock festival, they didn’t just leave satisfied fans in their wake. They also left $25,000 in grant money from their “All Within My Hands Foundation to feed the hungry in the Sacramento region. Another reason, besides their phenomenal music, to be a Metallica fan! (Facebook)
  • Can’t get enough of looking at all the dazzling Christmas light displays, but already seen all that our area has to offer? Take a virtual Christmas light tour across the nation with the cool videos on the Christmas Designers blog.

Kelly Risse

About me: My name is Kelly Mays Risse, and I have lived in Roseville just about all my life. I graduated from Roseville High School and majored in Journalism at CSU Sacramento. My husband and I loved growing up and raising our three boys here in the 'Ville. I have watched Roseville evolve from a cheerful little railroad town to a large and diverse city. I love where we live, from the hiking trails to the hip new restaurants, and I love the people who live here. I am excited to bring the highlights to you in The Roseville Daily!
