Dinner and a Movie: 'Mirror Mirror' Reflects Some Pleasant Surprises

Editor's Note — Dinner and a Movie is our newest feature on Roseville Patch. Every week, we'll give you a quick review of a new movie, where and when it plays and a dinner idea to go along with it.

Showtimes: "Mirror Mirror" is playing at on Eureka Road at 11:15 a.m., 12:05 p.m., 1:05 p.m., 2 p.m., 2:55 p.m., 3:55 p.m., 4:45 p.m., 5:40 p.m., 6:35 p.m., 7:35 p.m., 8:40 p.m., 9:20 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.

Review: It's more than just a remake of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Sure, the evil queen banishes her stepdaughter to the woods to avoid the attention of Prince Charming. Don't expect the same outcome in "Mirror Mirror."

Julia Roberts is well-suited to play the evil queen. Lily Collins plays the role of Snow White, and Armie Hammer is, of course, the Prince.  A great supporting cast around these three makes this a film for young and old to enjoy.

Adopted by a group of rebellious but kind dwarfs, Snow White transforms into a brave young woman, determined to save her country from the Queen. With the support and commitment of new friends, Snow White reclaims her birthright and wins back her Prince…with a few twists.

The movie is fun to watch. The filmmakers have changed a few of the key elements of the original story, including the ending and adding some more modern sensibilities to bring in a larger audience. It's this mix of modern and traditional story lines that tends to be a bit clunky. It just doesn't seem to fit sometimes. The flick-o-meter gives "Mirror Mirror" a three out of five. It's neither scary nor hilarious, neither real nor surreal; it's just an interesting twist on a story that, to this point, needs no rewrite.

We’ll be seeing another version of the famed fable, “Snow White and the Huntsman,” before you know it.
