Welcome back to the Roseville Daily, where you can get the 411 on all you need to know to kick off your day.

First, today's weather:

Our expected high on this sunny, breezy day is 71 degrees with an overnight low of 46 degrees. The wind has picked up and should be about 16-20 mph. That, and a super low daytime humidity of around 21%, has us on a Critical Fire Weather Alert today through tomorrow evening.

Here are the top stories today in Roseville:

  1. Teachers, education administrators and other school staff are getting a big Thank You from McDonald’s with a free nationwide breakfast giveaway through Friday, October 15th. All you need is a school identification to get the “most important meal of the day” served to you in a classic Happy Meal box. Wanna jump on the appreciation wagon? Honor special teachers in your life with a post on McDonald’s social media using #ThankYouMeal. (USA Today)
  2. Vegetarians, eco-conscious people and health-foodies of all walks are getting excited as Petaluma-based Amy’s Drive Thru gets closer to opening its new Roseville location. The restaurant will be located at 119 Galleria Blvd. (the former 76 gas station spot) and features a large menu of organic and vegetarian options (you’ve probably seen its frozen and prepared foods in the grocery store - the lentil vegetable soup is my fave!). I couldn’t get an exact opening date for you all, but it is having a hiring event this week so it must be soon! (QSR Magazine, Subscription: Sacramento Business Journal and Facebook)
  3. Outdoors lovers in Placer County have so many great hiking and horse trails to choose from, all within day-trip distance. The great news is that you don’t have to be an REI-clad super mountain warrior to enjoy these beautiful places. There’s a trail for everyone, with difficulty ranging from bring-your-grandma to near-cardiac-arrest (one incline on Stephen’s Trail near Auburn is actually called Cardiac Hill, with good reason). Mary West, author of the Day Hiker Gold Country Trail Guides series, shares a scenic local hike, and everything you need to know to Get Out There, in this article. (Gold Country Media)
  4. California’s journey to a greener tomorrow took another step on Saturday as Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation to ban the sale of all off-road, gas-powered engines. The bill would cover generators, lawn equipment, pressure washers, power tools and golf carts and is expected to go into effect by January 2024, or as soon as implementation is “feasible.” (News Break/Washington Examiner)
  5. Southwest Airlines cancelled thousands of scheduled flights over the weekend, some coming to or leaving from Sacramento International Airport. The airline cited weather changes and air traffic control issues in Florida as the cause of the cascading chaos that left travelers across the country scrambling. Southwest has experienced operational problems since June, according to Henry H. Harteveldt, president and travel industry analyst at The Atmosphere Research Group, which could hurt the company as fliers take that into account going into the busy holiday travel season. (CBS 13)

It may take a bad hop, but sometimes doing the right thing hurts.” (Instagram)
