Let’s get to it!

Today we can expect highs around 105 with lows tonight around 65. Tomorrow we should be a little cooler with a high around 102 and lows about 64 at night. Humidity is lower this weekend in the 38-52% range, and we can enjoy those delta breezes at 5-15 mph.

Today’s Top 5 Stories You Need to Know About:

1. Roseville High School knows how to celebrate Pollinators Week. The famously foul smelling Amorphophallus Titanum, or “corpse flower,” bloomed Thursday night in Domek Greenhouse on the school’s campus. The 6-foot-plus tall flower can take a decade to bloom from a seeding, opening only for 24 hours before closing again. This year’s bloom is exceptional because it is a second flowering from the plant that also opened last September. (SDG)

2. Placer County recently approved a 3-year contract with Cal Fire, continuing a partnership between the two agencies that has lasted for decades. The contract will provide fire protection and emergency medical services for one third of Placer County, covering about 57,000 residents. The protection provided by the partnership is especially important as Placer County faces elevated risk for wild fires from our current extreme drought conditions. (SacBee)

3. Good news for those of you headed to Lake Tahoe this summer: the Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transportation (TART) program has launched! The fleet of sleek gray vans provides free curb-to-curb service within the three TART Connect Zones in North Tahoe and Incline Village. TART was created to help address some of the region’s growing traffic issues. Get the app and start exploring! (TART)

4. In the latest bid to prevent a wave of homelessness and help small landlords affected by COVID-19, Governor Newsom announced a new, more expansive, rental assistance plan yesterday. The new deal would increase rent reimbursements to landlords to 100%, up from the 80% initially proposed, and extend the eviction moratorium scheduled to end this month to September 30. (SacBee)

5. If the Roseville Daily had a “Crazy But True” column, this story would go there. A long-awaited report on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) came out this week, addressing a number of reported incidents and videos of flying objects occurring between 2004 and 2021. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) published the report in response to a request from the U.S. Congress made last year. Since that request, the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (yup, we have one of those) spent 6 months researching 143 unexplained reports, reaching little conclusion except that the UAPs were physical objects and could pose a threat to air travel. Evidence of advanced technology was found in 18 of the investigated incidents. The truth is out there … (Fox40)

About me

My name is Kelly Mays Risse, and I have lived in Roseville just about all my life. I graduated from Roseville High School and majored in Journalism at CSU Sacramento. If you recognize me, it may be from St. Clare Church, where I have worked for the past 10 years. Or maybe from the myriad of activities my husband and I have been part of while raising our three boys here. I have watched Roseville grow from a cheerful little railroad town to a large and diverse city. I love where we live, from the hiking trails to the hip new restaurants, and the people who live here. I am excited to bring the highlights to you!
