First, today's weather:

Find out what's happening in Rosevillefor free with the latest updates from Patch.

Temps should be going down by Sunday, but don't pack away those pool noodles just yet - we've still got to get through today's expected high of 98 degrees. Ugh. But it should cool down tonight to a nice 63. We'll continue to see light winds today in the 5-10 mph range and humidity will be really low at around 18% during the day.

Here are the top stories in Roseville today:

  1. One local nursery has been celebrating the new season this week with a virtual Fall Festival. Green Acres Nursery & Supply has been posting new videos on its social media every day since Monday with planting tips, houseplant help, a live tour of its pumpkin patch and more. Tomorrow's segment will have fun activities for "kids of all ages," including pumpkin painting and recipes. Visit the Fall Festival webpage for the links to all the videos. If you are not on social media, the videos will be available on the website soon. (idiggreenacres.com)
  2. The beloved Sacramento Zoo in Land Park has delighted families in our region for 94 years. But the aging enclosures and land-locked location of the zoo impeded the updating required to keep the site in compliance with modern standards of animal care. The Sac Zoological Society announced yesterday that it has entered to an agreement to evaluate a move to undeveloped land in Elk Grove. The move would allow the zoo to expand and modernize its operations for future generations of visitors. (ABC 10)
  3. Prep football fanatics can get their head in the game for week four of the 2021 season with this preview from Aaron Jackson of Gold Country Media. Some big face-offs are happening tonight for our hometown high schools. Get the lowdown on their standings and make sure you root for the Tigers, Vikings, Timberwolves and Panthers tonight! (Gold Country Media)
  4. Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new law barring mega-retailers like Amazon from firing warehouse workers for missing quotas that interfere with breaks mandated by existing labor laws. California is the first state to set quota limits for retailers. Several labor advocacy groups, including the Warehouse Worker Resource Center and the Strategic Organizing Center, have cited serious safety concerns about Amazon's warehouse employees' working conditions. The bill also requires workplace regulators to investigate if a worksite or employer has an annual employee injury rate at least 1.5 times higher than the warehousing industry’s average. (KTXL FOX 40 Sacramento)
  5. Despite statewide efforts to increase COVID-19 vaccine awareness and availability, the Sacramento region lags far behind the Bay Area and other state regions in vaccination rates. Just over 60% of Placer and Sacramento County's eligible residents have been vaccinated, compared with just under 80% in the Bay Area and 85% in other parts of California. “We’ve seen definitely a very strong relationship between the proportion of the population that’s vaccinated and the frequency of new infections, hospitalizations and deaths. We see that nationally, we see that in California,” said Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, a professor of Population and Public Health Sciences at USC. Health officials expect another surge in COVID-19 cases to hit the nation around the holiday season. (CBS Sacramento)
