Let’s get to it!

But first, you need to know about the weather:

Find out what's happening in Rosevillefor free with the latest updates from Patch.

It’s hot. Like really, really HOT. The high is expected to reach 110 degrees. Tonight’s low is expected to be about 72. The good news is the humidity will be about 16%. The Excessive Heat Warning is in effect through tomorrow (and possibly Saturday) so save vigorous outdoor exercise for before 10:00 am and after 6:00 pm for the next few days.

Today’s Top 5 Stories You Need to Know About:

  • If you need a place to cool off over the next few days of ungodly heat, the City of Roseville has you covered. The Downtown Library on Taylor St. will be open as an official cooling center, with extended hours today through Saturday. Face masks are required during cooling center hours. You can also keep your cool at one of the other city libraries, pools, spray grounds or the Utility Exploration Center during its normal open hours. (CoR)
  • Mask Confusion: to mask or not to mask? That is the question. I had the opportunity to witness the social awkwardness caused by all this uncertainty at Costco yesterday as many of my fellow shoppers tried to figure the new norm. While California’s reopening on Tuesday is a cause for celebration for many, there is still some confusion about face masks. The State of California mandates that, for the most part, vaccinated persons do not need to mask up in public spaces, with some specific exceptions. Still confused? Do the deep dive at (SacBee).
  • Placer County and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office have determined that an airplane found in the deep water of Folsom Lake last week is not the wreckage from a fatal crash from 1965, as previously believed. The wreckage is actually from a non-fatal plane crash that occurred in 1986. Family members of the deceased from the 1965 crash have expressed that they are content that their loved ones remain resting at the bottom of the lake. (PCSO)
  • Walmart is giving back to our community by offering free online classes to anyone 16 or older from its Rocklin location. Nationwide there are over 200 Walmart Community Academies that offer classes tailored to meet the needs and interests of their surrounding communities. The free classes are available online for now but the company expects to add in-person options soon. Classes include “how-to” courses on job interviews, resume building, buying a new car, how to apply to college, starting a business and more. (Fox40)
  • The former Sleep Train Arena in Natomas has been empty since the Sacramento Kings moved their realm to the Golden 1 Center in downtown Sac. But plans are in motion to bring a medical school and teaching hospital to the site with a deal between the Sacramento Kings owners, the City of Sacramento and California Northstate University. Things to do Today:

  • Newcastle Lavender Farm Open U-Pick: $10 admission includes entry to the beautiful grounds at the farm and one u-pick bundle of lavender. 5:00pm
  • Family Carpool Cinema: Bring the whole family and relive the days of the drive-in movie at Madison Marketplace Shopping Center in Sacramento (Green Quality Dry Clean parking lot). You can get your thrills watching Jurassic Park and feel good knowing your $5 per car ticket (Eventbrite) will benefit the Sacramento Food Bank. 8:45opm-10:45pm

Notebook:

  • Due to excessive heat, tonight’s Food Truck Mania is cancelled.
  • Hidden Falls Regional Park is closed today-Saturday due to the Excessive Heat Warning.
  • Our local utilities recommend not using large appliances between the hours of 10:00 am and 6:00 pm (peak usage time) during the high temperature days. This will help stave off the need for rolling blackouts if our electric grid gets overworked.

You are now officially ready to start your day.

About me

My name is Kelly Mays Risse, and I have lived in Roseville just about all my life. I graduated from Roseville High School majored in Journalism at CSU Sacramento. If you recognize me, it may be from St. Clare Church, where I worked the past 10 years. Or maybe from the myriad activities my husband and I have been part of while raising our three boys here. I have watched Roseville grow from a cheerful little railroad town to a large and diverse city. I love where we live, from the hiking trails to the hip new restaurants, and the people who live here. I am excited to bring the highlights to you!
