Braces may be recommended to children and adolescents for a variety of reasons, including guidance of orofacial development, improvement of appearance, and enhancement of protection against oral health problems later in life. While many children may benefit most from either early or adolescent orthodontics, some patients may receive maximum improvement with a two-phase approach.
Early Orthodontic Treatment
Early treatment is often started around age seven, when most children should receive an evaluation to determine whether they need braces. At this age, braces are used to correct moderate or severe bite irregularities and promote proper development of the teeth and jaws.
Adolescent Orthodontic Treatment
Our Rocklin orthodontist may recommend braces for correction of less severe bite irregularities in patients whose permanent teeth have already erupted. Normally performed around age 11 or 12, adolescent treatment takes advantage of the present growth spurt to quickly give patients results that will last for life.
Some patients may receive recommendations for two-phase treatment that includes both early and adolescent treatment based on treatment requirements. Depending on eligibility, patients may be able to choose between multiple types of braces. A consultation with our expert in braces for kids in Rocklin can be scheduled to learn more about orthodontics for younger patients.
