Here are the top five stories in Roseville today:

  1. People are gathering again and that means performing arts are flourishing. Three upcoming productions are worthy of note in Folsom this month. William Shakespeare’s classic comedy As You Like It comes to the David Girard Vineyards in May, courtesy of Falcon’s Eye Theatre at Folsom Lake College. Sutter Street Theatre in Folsom presents a heartwarming tale of a family in transition with Sarah, Plain and Tall. And, finally, Folsom Lake Symphony closes its 2021-22 season the weekend of June 4 & 5 with “Opera Meets Broadway.” (Village Life)
  2. The grid engineer, the lineman and the emergency responders, how do they all work together to keep us safe and comfortable? I have absolutely no idea! But 30 area high school students got some exposure to all of that at the Corporation Yard in Roseville when Roseville Utilities and the Utility Exploration Center hosted a field day for them. “It was really cool seeing the electrical grid on one big screen and seeing how complex everything was, but also seeing how everyone knew what they were doing and how they worked together,” said Mason, an Antelope High School student and future Roseville Electric intern. The day was so successful, plans for future field days for more high school students are under way. (roseville.ca.us)
  3. I was so proud of myself because I walked a half marathon last weekend... and then I saw this story. THIS dude is running all the way across the country! Michael Wardian, 48 started in San Francisco on May 1 and made his way down Sutter Street in Folsom on Tuesday. He's raising money and awareness for clean water in Africa. He plans to run 50 miles a day until he reaches the nation's capital on July 4th. (Folsom Telegraph)
  4. Placer Land Trust recently transferred ownership of 40 acres of forestland above the North Fork of the American River to the Colfax-Todds Valley Consolidated Tribe. “For a long time, Tribes in California have lost land,” says Tribal Chairman Clyde Prout III. “Having a piece of land actually come back to the Tribe, where we can utilize our traditional cultural stewardship practices and have a place to gather — it’s huge." The land will now be known as Yo’ Dok’im Pakan – Gerjuoy North Fork Preserve. (Placer Tribune)
  5. As a part of the Arts Council of Placer County Cultural Mapping study, they want your input! Take this survey to help them have the most impact with arts and culture throughout the county. With your ideas, they can better support an enriched environment for both residents and visitors. And there's even a bonus! You can enter to win $200 toward the purchase of art from a local artist! Supporting the arts and acquiring the arts. Artfully done! (placerarts.org)

From my notebook:

  • Say it isn't so! Butt, it is. The Auburn butt lady is retiring and leaving Auburn for Orland. Her landlord is selling and she can't afford to buy the place. If you've not heard of the Auburn butt lady, you are among a small cohort. She is "famous" country-wide for picking up cigarette butts all over Auburn. In fact, in her years of toil, she has picked up 2,206,365 butts. That's quite a feat! Orland's gain is, truly, Auburn's loss. (Gold Country Media)
  • Roseville Music in the Park has announced it's 2022 schedule! Music in the Park takes place at Royer Park on select Sunday evenings during the summer.
  • Check out the Campfire programs at Maidu Museum through August! Listen to Native American stories and roast marshmallows around the campfire at the outdoor amphitheater of the Maidu Museum & Historic Site.
