Marine Killed in Combat Went to Oakmont High

U.S. Marine Gurpreet Singh was killed in Afghanistan June 22. Singh grew up in Antelope.

Gurpreet Singh, a U.S. Marine Corporal, was killed in combat June 22 in Afghanistan, according to India-West, an Indian newspaper.

The 21-year-old went to in Roseville, according to the article, and grew up in Antelope. He was born in Hoshiapur, Punjab, but immigrated to the U.S. in 2000.

Singh died from wounds he received while in combat in Helmand province, Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense. He was assigned to the 5th Marine Regiment in the 1st Marine Division.

Singh’s father, Nirmal, told India-West that his son “was always a very patriotic man for the U.S. From the time he was a little boy, he knew he wanted to serve in the U.S. military.”

According to news reports, Singh received the Purple Heart, a Combat Action Ribbon, a National Defense Service Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Medal, a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and an Afghanistan Campaign Medal.

Funeral services for Singh will be held at 11 a.m. on July 2 at Mount Vernon Memorial Park in Fair Oaks, India-West reports.
