- Faced with skyrocketing rates of infection and hospitalizations due to the delta variant of COVID-19, two nearby counties, Sacramento and Yolo, have re-implemented mandates for facemasks indoors, regardless of vaccination status. The mandates are expected to slow the spread of the highly contagious variant. So far, Placer County health officials are only recommending indoor masking on a voluntary basis, except in places like health offices and public transportation where masks are still required. (ABC10)
- The Vernon Street Parking Garage at 405 Vernon St. (next to Blue Line Arts) is getting a facelift that includes painting and re-striping from August 8 through August 18. Different levels of the structure will be closed on different days throughout this time. The entire garage is expected to re-open on August 19. Click on the link to see the detailed closure schedule. - Fabletics, the popular activewear chain started by actress Kate Hudson, is opening its first Sacramento area location at the Roseville Galleria on August 7. The retailer hosted a "soft opening" yesterday with special shopping appointments for a lucky 100 shoppers. The 1,138-square-foot Roseville location offers clothing for men and women, includes a lounge area and utilizes the unique technology the chain is known for. - Placer County's forested areas, especially around Lake Tahoe, are seeing an increase in bear activity in close proximity to humans this year. Campers in bear country have always known to keep food and good-smelling items in the metal "bear boxes" provided by campgrounds to keep our furry friends in line. But four recent home break-ins by bears have everyone taking extra precautions. Wildlife officials attribute the increased frequency and intensity of bear activity to population growth in the area and a lack of water sources caused by the drought. (FOX40)
- Carrie Limon of Roseville went to Sutter Roseville Medical Center to give birth to her son back in May, suffering from what she thought was a sinus infection. It turns out she had COVID. Shortly after the delivery the next day, baby Nathaniel went to the Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and mom went to another part of the hospital to be treated for the virus. The new mom was near death and was eventually put on a life-support machine for a month. She was one of the lucky ones who went on to recover. Limon, who chose not to get the COVID vaccine during her pregnancy, is now sharing her story to urge others to get vaccinated. (ABC10.com KXTV)
