Here are the top five stories today in Roseville:
- Roseville Mayor Krista Bernasconi delivered the State of the City address at West Park High School on Friday August 26. She dedicated part of the speech to fallen soldier and Roseville native Nicole Gee, one of 13 Marines killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan one year ago on August 26. The mayor also highlighted the explosive growth Roseville has seen since the pandemic, cheering the economic growth and obvious livability of the city while also cautioning that growth brings challenges for the future. She highlighted the investment in programs to address issues of homelessness, including social services embedded in the police department. (KCRA Sacramento)
- Check out the picture of the unexpected "water feature" at Sunset and Park in Rocklin Saturday. A Rocklin teacher captured pictures of this ruptured hydrant-turned- geyser. The Rocklin Fire Department arrived onsite and promptly shut it down by 10:46 a.m. according to the teacher, Eric Sturgeon. (Roseville Today)
- Placer took on Roseville on Thursday night at LeFebvre Stadium in Auburn. Roseville was down at halftime, but they came back from the break strong with a third quarter shutout of the Placer team. Ultimately, Placer prevailed, though with a 30-27 victory. (Gold Country Media)
- From the City of Rocklin: "the Rocklin City Council approved the distribution of more than $400,000 to support mental and behavioral health programs on Tuesday night. The money will be provided to four local organizations to support programs designed to provide services to Rocklin residents, with a particular emphasis on children and youth." You can see the agencies and organizations receiving funds and how much was allocated to each at this link from the City. (City of Rocklin)
- September is Hunger Action Month, and more than 30,000 people in Placer County alone experience food insecurity. To raise awareness and address local need, the Placer Food Security Coalition is hosting a community food drive at the Gold Country Fairgrounds on September 8, 10 and 11. Alternatively, you can also donate to a virtual food drive fund at www.placer.ca.gov/DonateFood. All donations will go to the Placer Food Bank.
