Health & Fitness

Miss1™

In America, the land of plenty, one-fifth of all children (16.4 million) live below the federal poverty line. Of these children, 3.55 million live in households that earn less than $2 per person per day (The Rotarian, December 2013, pg18). While the stock market touches new heights and income disparity between the haves and have nots continues to widen, inflation adjusted, the current minimum wage is worth less than it was in the 1960s. Unfortunate outcome: millions of American families repeatedly run short of food, hunger for them is a cruel reality; seniors and children suffer the most. Undernourished children are more likely to have behavioral problems, poor school performance, and food insecurity negatively affects their self-esteem.

Hunger in America! Not acceptable.

Another problem is the fact that food within easy access to the low income population is highly processed and unhealthy.  Combine this with the unrelenting commercials for fast food, cash strapped customers flock to eat the calories-loaded, sugar laden, high sodium ‘dollar value’ meals. The unfortunate outcome: obesity, T2 diabetes, heart disease, just to name a few.

Miss1™ asks you to forego one of your favorite events and donate the resulting savings to feed the hungry. To help you get started, we have compiled a list of events you, your family, and friends could forego: Antibacterial Soap, Backpacking Trip, Ball Game, Birthday Party, Café Latte, Carwash, Chemicals Loaded Fast Food, Cigarettes, Cruise, Cuban Cigar, Diet Cola, Disney Trip, Energy Bar, Energy Drink, Fishing & Hunting Trip, Golf Game, Haircut, Manicures & Pedicures, Necktie, Nonstick Cookware, Oreos, Sushi, Tattoo, Toy Guns, Water From Fiji (it really isn’t that fresh after a journey spanning thousands of miles).

We invite you to select an event to forego (or you can decide on your own event), and donate the resulting savings to a local food bank/pantry. This act of kindness would help provide much needed nutrition to fellow Americans facing hunger. Tell us about the event you selected to forego, your donation amount, and the recipient organization: gkapur@familygreensurvival.com
