Movie Sales Drop at Roseville Theater After Colorado Shooting Spree

Movie ticket sales were slow this weekend in Roseville despite a big opening weekend nationally for premiere.

A manager at Roseville's United Artists Olympus Pointe theater on North Sunrise Avenue, who wished to not be named, wasn't sure if the slow weekend was directly affected by fearful patrons choosing to stay away from movie theaters after the of the latest "Batman" movie that left 12 dead and 58 injured in Colorado.

"No one has made any comment about it to me directly," the manager said. 

The manager did say this weekend's ticket sales were "slow" and "not as busy as we hoped it would be."

"We anticipated twice as much as we got," the manager said.

Staff expected to sell 400 tickets an hour, but instead saw about 200 an hour for all movies playing, the manager said.

"It's not typical for a blockbuster; it's slow," the manager said, adding that 200 tickets an hour is typical for a movie premiere weekend that isn't so popular.

Nationally, "The Dark Knight Rises" did well at the box office. According to The New York Times, sales totaled $162 million over the weekend. When "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" opened last summer, ticket sales totaled $169.2 million, The New York Times reported.
