Here are the top five stories today in Roseville:

  1. Police remained on scene Monday morning at Hampton Inn and Suites, site of an altercation that ended in the death of one of the participants. The hotel has recently been converted into housing for those experiencing homelessness. The suspect has been arrested. Police are questioning other unhoused residents to see if they have information regarding what started the violent altercation. Anyone with further information is urged to contact the Roseville Police Department at 916-774-5000. (KCRA3)
  2. Thirty-five student athletes from Folsom Lake College have signed letters of intent to national programs for next year and more than 60 can claim the title of “Scholar Athletes” (3.0 GPA or better in-season, including 12 with 4.0). The Folsom Lake College Athletic Department honored its 2021-22 outstanding student athletes and teams on Tuesday night, May 10, during the sixth annual Athletic Awards Night. (Gold Country Media)
  3. Unfortunately, the Rotary Club of El Dorado Hills’ Wine & Dine at Town Center is another victim of short staffing. Most of the past vendors are unable to participate in what would have been the 26th annual event due to inadequate staff. Club members are now evaluating what fundraising events might be held this year and next. (Village Life)
  4. Concerts On The Square is BACK! On the third Saturday of each month from June to September, come to Vernon Street Town Square to hear great music. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. So come on down and enjoy some tasty food truck grub, visit the beer garden and claim your space for the show. Free admission. $75 nightly cabana rentals are available. June 18 is Lovedrive, a Scorpions tribute band. (Roseville.ca.us)

Are you a Roseville resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where Roseville Daily readers can skip the waitlist.

From my notebook:

For my notebook today, I thought I'd peruse the Placer County Government site. I'm so glad I did! Look at all of the great stuff they have out there!

  • Did you know Placer County has a film office? It does! It helps filmmakers make Placer County their preferred filming location! It has resources for big studios as well as independent guys and still photographers, as well. There are a TON of resources to help anyone with a camera. One thing I found particularly interesting is it has a database with all of the films shot in Placer County. It turns out "Almost Famous" made us famous enough that "Rocky and Bullwinkle" wanted to get in on the Placer action!
  • Thinking of starting a new business in Placer County? If so, figuring out where to start and which hoops you need to jump through doesn't have to be daunting! The Placer Business Resource Center (PBRC) partners with the Sierra Small Business Development Center (SBDC), to offer free, confidential one-on-one advising just for you!
  • Check out 20 pages of demographics for Placer County District 1! (Roseville is mostly in District 1, with a smidge in District 4.) You'll find everything from median age to median income to housing information and more! The number one reason to LOVE the Roseville district in my book? This district spends more of its discretionary income on entertainment and eating out than any other category. Gotta love that!
