First, today's weather:

What?! We're back in the 80s again? Well enjoy it, my friends, as it looks like it could be the last warm spell for the season (I know, I keep saying that). The day should be sunny, with an expected high of 81 degrees and an overnight low of 51. Winds are expected to be light and variable at about 4 mph and humidity should be low at about 27% during the day.

Here are the top stories in Roseville today:

  1. It was a crime that shocked the quiet West Roseville neighborhood where Shankar Nagappa killed his family two years ago. Nagappa then led law enforcement on a chase culminating in Shasta County, where he turned himself in and later pled guilty to all counts against him. The Placer County District Attorney's Office announced yesterday that Nagappa will be sentenced on November 10th for three counts of murder for his three children and one count of deliberately aiding his wife in committing suicide. (Roseville Today)
  2. The Fire Academy at Sierra College in Rocklin is making sure up-and-coming firefighters are well prepared for the challenges they will face in their chosen career. A new training tower at the academy's grounds behind Grass Valley Fire Station No. 2 was unveiled on Tuesday as spectators watched a demonstration (with real fire!). Check out the cool photos. (The Union of Grass Valley)
  3. And speaking of fire ... this story comes out of Campbell, California just outside of San Jose, but it's an important reminder about proper battery disposal. A garbage truck in the town caught fire on Wednesday, also causing damage to a nearby power pole. The cause was lithium batteries improperly disposed of in the owner's trash receptacle. Two similar fires in the same neighborhood within the last month were also linked to lithium batteries. Lucky for us in Placer County, our waste management agency has a whole webpage we can refer to when dealing with battery disposal. Check it out! (KRON 4 and Placer Recycles)

Roseville Patch Notebook:

  • Our Roseville Fire Department is all in when it comes to Breast Cancer Awareness in October. Not only are they sporting special pink accented patches on their uniforms (as are other first responders in Roseville and Placer County), it looks like Engine 3 has had a special paint job for the occasion. (Facebook)
  • Poor Ronin! The intrepid Placer County Sheriff K-9 officer has once again become the victim of a certain striped malodorous miscreant. So far, it’s Ronin 0skunks 2. The assailant was still at large as of press time yesterday. (Facebook)
