Here are the top five stories today in Roseville:
- Roseville will have a new City Clerk starting on January 31st, according to City Manager Dominick Casey who announced the appointment of Carmen Avalos to the position. Avalos comes to us with many years of experience in municipal leadership, and currently serves as the City Clerk for the City of South Gate and as the senior deputy clerk for the City of Hawthorne in Los Angeles County. As Roseville’s City Clerk, she will oversee elections, assist candidates and elected officials, manage the city’s passport office, oversee city boards/commissions/committees and ensure compliance with local, state and federal statutes. Learn more about her background in this article. (Roseville Today)
- Raising Cane's, the much anticipated fast food restaurant specializing in Louisiana-style chicken, is set to open February 8th at 1220 Galleria Boulevard (in Creekside Town Center). Special giveaways for the grand opening include a drawing for “Free Cane’s for a Year” and free t-shirts for the first 100 dine-in customers. If the grand opening of its Citrus Heights location is any indication, expect a big crowd! (ABC 10 )
- There is no end to the creativity of the people of Roseville – especially when it comes to naming the city’s new parks. Faced with the daunting task of naming seven new parks in the city's pipeline (!), the City of Roseville asked residents to offer their suggestions. Among those suggestions for the two-acre park slated for the Campus Oaks neighborhood is “Super Happy Fun Time.” Tara Gee of the Parks Department weighed in with, "'Super Happy Fun Time' really describes why we build parks. The Parks and Recreation Commission voted on this and they really liked the fun perspective that that name brings." We’ll see if the new park (which will have pickle ball courts, a fitness course and an off-leash dog park) lives up to its name when the groundbreaking happens this summer. (CBS 13)
- Water has become the new gold in California as we spend the summers painstakingly conserving and the winters anxiously watching the sky and Sierra for rain and snow. Our Placer County Board of Supervisors recently voted to ensure our future supply of this precious resource by approving a groundwater sustainability plan for the North American Subbasin. Emphasizing local control, coordination with land-use agencies and long-term strategy, the plan fulfills the state Sustainable Groundwater Management Act that mandates local water regulators form agencies expressly addressing groundwater issues by January 31st, 2022. The North American Subbasin lies under portions of Placer, Sacramento and Sutter Counties. (Roseville Press Tribune)
- After 35 years of bringing top-notch rock artists to our area and serving as the heart of the Sacramento music scene in the 80s and 90s, The Boardwalk in Orangevale is shutting its doors for good. The venue’s social media cited the pandemic, dwindling crowds and mounting financial pressures as reasons for the closure. DJ Pat of 98 Rock radio station reminisced, “There were people like Robin Trawer and Pat Travers – and John Entwistle from The Who. They played there. All the big local acts: Tesla, Deftones, Oleander, Papa Roach, Cake.” The Boardwalk is selling off 300 signed guitars as part of the closure. (Gold Country Media and CBS 13)

- Historic Folsom attracts lots of visitors with its fun events and great atmosphere. But it seems the city is fed up with parking scofflaws. You’ll want to make sure you’re parked legally (as you always are, right?) next time you visit now that the Folsom City Council approved a triple increase in parking fines – from $25 to $75 - for the Historic District. (Roseville Today)
- Anglers can look forward to a great year for steelhead on the American River – and that’s no fish tale – according to the latest counts coming in from the Nimbus Fish Hatchery. High river flows are to credit for bringing in the unique Eel River strain of steelhead, which have been known to reach up to 20 pounds in weight. The hatchery expects to meet its annual production goal of 430,000 fish, so get your tacklebox ready! (Stockton Record)
