Open for Business: Sweet Stuff Cakery

Having a sweet tooth runs in Veronica Saechao’s family.

Growing up, she said her mother was constantly in the kitchen baking. That passion for sweets was passed down to Saechao, who now runs Sweet Stuff Cakery, a dessert shop that specializes in the bite-sized treats.

Sweet Stuff Cakery opened in May in the Vineyard Pointe shopping center on Foothills Boulevard at Vineyard Road in Roseville. The shop’s bright blue walls and toy area lets newcomers know that kids are welcome. A storytime is held at 11 a.m. inside the cakery the last Friday of every month.

What sets this cupcakery apart is the large selection of not just cupcake flavors but other sugary treats. The shop sells custom-decorated cakes for celebrations, cake balls and cake pops and 21 cupcake flavors.

“We do a little bit of everything,” Saechao said.

The cakes are baked in an off-site oven daily in Roseville and brought into the Foothills Boulevard shop location. All of the desserts are made from scratch, Saechao said and can be customized to be vegan, gluten-free or sugar-free.

Saechao said she learned her cake-decorating skills by tuning into Food Network shows like the Ultimate Cake-Off. Through practice, she has been able to create unusual cake-requests such as a “sushi” wedding cake for a couple who met at a sushi restaurant, Saechao said.

But what many people come into the shop for are the cupcakes. Some of her most inventive flavors are PB&J – a vanilla cake with strawberry filling and topped with peanut butter frosting; Salty Pretzel – a caramel cake with salted caramel buttercream, a drizzle of caramel and a chocolate pretzel; and Bananas – a banana walnut cake with cream cheese frosting and a chocolate caramel drizzle.

The cupcake menu varies by day and Saechao said she’s always coming up with new flavors such as Apricot Delight, a vanilla cake filled with apricot preserves and topped with a shortbread crumble. A complete and current menu is available here.
