Here are the top stories today in Roseville:
- Last week's robbery of a Roseville couple in the driveway of their home is a reminder to us all to practice awareness and vigilance when out and about. The couple, and Roseville Police, believe they may have been targeted and followed home after a shopping trip to Nordstrom in the Roseville Galleria mall. Roseville Police Department spokesperson Rob Baquera urges people to practice "situational awareness," avoiding distractions and remaining alert to what is going on around you. Learn about more safety tips at (ABC10).
- Hazardous Materials crews were called to clean up over 80 gallons of diesel fuel from a collision near Thunder Valley Casino Resort yesterday morning. The spill, which shut down westbound Athens Ave. until around 10:00 am, was caused when a pickup truck broadsided a gravel truck. The driver of the gravel truck is suspected of driving under the influence (DUI). (Sacramento Bee)
- With just a few weeks left before K-12 students return to school, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued updated recommendations on COVID safety protocols in schools for the 2021-22 school year. Among the new recommendations were mandatory facemasks for children ages 2 and older and an emphasis on the benefits of in-person learning over virtual. (AAP Publications)
- Congratulations to Roseville native Neilson Powless who just finished his second Tour de France. Powless, 24, finished 13th on stage 15 (into Andorra) and 43rd overall out of 200 cyclists. He rode for team EF Education-Nippo, "paying his dues" in a support role meant to help the team's captain secure a race win. Team captain, Rigoberto Urán, made it to second overall in the Pyrѐnѐes until faltering during the final mountainous stages of the tour. (Velonews and Sacramento Bee)
- Long waits and price surges are vexing travelers at Sacramento International Airport (SMF) looking to hire rides. Wait times can be up to 40 minutes, some passengers report, while evening price surges can drive a fare to downtown up to $120 over the usual $25 charge. Uber issued a statement attributing the problems to a lack of drivers. They expect the situation to improve as drivers return to the platform to "take advantage of higher earnings opportunities."
