Here are the top five stories in Roseville today:
- In a unanimous vote, our Placer County Board of Supervisors approved the adoption of The Camping and Personal Property Storage on County Property and Public Areas ordinance (wow, that’s a mouthful!) on Tuesday. Recognizing that many homeless persons in Placer County are camping by necessity, the ordinance sets expectations for campers’ behavior and the condition of their camp areas. (Gold Country Media)
- The Russian invasion of Ukraine has hit especially close to home for one class at Rock Creek Elementary School in Rocklin, prompting the teacher and students to embark on a mission of healing through a letter writing campaign. “My classroom is a microcosm of what’s happening in the world. I have a student whose father is in Poland on a peacekeeping mission,” said 4th-grade teacher Wendy Grider. “I have another student; his mother is Russian and his father is Ukrainian. This is touching the lives of the kids in my class.” The cards and letters of encouragement, 400 in total, will be sent to servicemembers and refuges this week. (FOX 40)
- It’s been a rite of passage for California high school juniors and seniors pursuing higher education as far back as most of us can remember – the SAT (Scholastic Achievement Test). And, depending on the colleges applied to, some students had to add on 1-3 additional ACT (American College Test) scores. But Wednesday, the California State University system made the move to drop the exams from its admissions process, taking a page from the University of California system which dropped the tests last year. Read on for more information on why state universities are adopting the “test free” admissions process. (Patch Media and ABC 10)
- Occasionally, I run across an article that reminds me I do not, in fact, know everything about Roseville. Yes, I am one of the people who thought the big red “Cosmos” sculpture in Sculpture Park symbolized a rose. If you are scratching your head in confusion right now, check out this article to get the real story on our iconic Roseville landmark. After reading, be sure to visit the park, located behind Home Depot on N. Sunrise Ave., while the weather is perfect for a stroll. (Roseville Today)
- If you've been thinking about trying the new Amy's Drive Thru on Galleria Blvd. (in the Galleria parking lot), but are intimidated by the "hippie health food" description, check out this great review by our friends at Sacramento Magazine. You'll get a little history on the company and you'll be tempted by the yummy-looking food photos. (Sacramento Magazine)

From my notebook:
- Up-to-date identifying records can be vital to law enforcement when trying to locate a missing child. - The Roseville Public Library book clubs meet in a little over two weeks - time to get reading! Choose from My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout or River of Red Gold by Naida West. The groups meet on April 9 at the Maidu branch. (Facebook)
- It’s that time of year again, folks! Our newest neighbors out in West Roseville are getting little sleep lately, wondering what the heck those loud BOOMs are every night. It’s the farmers! Or rather, the zon guns they use to scare hungry geese away from the crops. Though it sounds like a canon, there is no projectile, just a very loud sound. Fortunately, this is a temporary, seasonal practice that will be over once the crops are mature enough to longer look tasty to the birds. Hang in there, Westies. (What’s Happening in Roseville)
- Why should billionaires and Game Stop stockholders be the only ones who get to go to the moon? Get your free boarding pass for Artemis I, NASA’s Orion spacecraft set to launch in late May/early June. The boarding pass is a confirmation that your name will be added to a flash drive that will fly aboard the mission, circling the moon. (Twitter and NASA.gov)
