- At 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, the Placer County Board of Supervisors will vote on the appointment of Acting Sheriff (formerly Undersheriff) Wayne Woo as the Placer County Sheriff-Coroner-Marshal. If approved by the board, Woo will replace Sheriff Devon Bell who retired on on July 6 and will serve as Sheriff for the remainder of Bell’s term, effective immediately. His full term will begin in January 2023. Woo hoo! (Gold Country Media)
- Loomis resident Kristin Reese is an EMT. In April, three months after Russia invaded Ukraine, she decided she wanted to use her skills in Ukraine. “I saw the atrocities being committed by Russia (in Ukraine) and felt like I had a calling to go over and help the people in any way that I could,” Reese told Gold Country Media. She’s done everything from training medics to delivering supplies. Her visa runs out in a couple of weeks and she will return home, but she is not ruling out going back. “The main takeaway I've had from this experience so far is how wonderful, welcoming and resilient the Ukrainian people are and how they're so grateful to all of the foreigners from around the world who have given up so much to come fight this Russian invasion, whether it be through the humanitarian effort, medically or to fight,” Reese said. She’s a much braver soul than I am. (Gold Country Media)
- Kathie Perry of Auburn earned her 25th Tevis Cup belt Sunday, at the tender age of 78. Kathie started endurance riding in 1969 and won the Tevis in 1978, three years after trying her first one. What keeps her coming back? The challenges are what keeps her in the races. She says when it's not fun anymore, she'll bow out of the races. “I have as much fun training my horse for the Tevis as I do riding in the Tevis,” Perry said. (Auburn Journal)
- The Placer County Grand Jury has issued its final report. It took on everything from cybersecurity to homelessness. The grand jury is an investigatory body with the authority to act as a watchdog over local government, to investigate citizen complaints and to assist in criminal matters at the request of the district attorney. Individuals serve for a year and it is a voluntary role. See the 2021-2022 final report here. (placer.courts.ca.gov)
- PaddleSplash, the three-day paddle boarding festival on Lake Natoma was a big hit this weekend. The festival is the main fundraising vehicle for NorCal SUP. "We are a kids youth paddle boarding team and we try to give back to the community... and this is our big fundraiser," said Shelly Alves, owner of NorCal SUP. All ages and abilities were welcome. The festival featured SUP races with varying distances, a kid's short course race, yoga on the water, board demos, food truck, vendors and SUP skills clinics led by World Champion Candice Appleby. Life vests were given away for free to promote safety in the water and the festival ended with a beach cleanup. (KCRA Sacramento)
