This storm is going to be a BIG one, according to the National Weather Service, with heavy rain and snow in the Sierra. Mountain travel is “highly discouraged” until things start to clear up on Friday. Be safe out there!

Here are the top five stories in Roseville today:

  1. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) face mask mandate for people utilizing public transportation was overturned by a federal judge in Florida on Monday, spurring several major airlines and public transportation agencies across the country to drop their mask requirements. In our region, this means you can now ride mask-free on Roseville Transit, Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRt), Uber and Lyft vehicles, Amtrak trains and Greyhound buses. Sacramento International Airport is following Transportation Security Administration (TSA) guidance by no longer requiring masks. Folks in the Bay Area are still waiting for a decision on whether the mask requirement will continue for BART. (ABC 10 and CBS 13)
  2. Speaking of transportation, Southwest Airlines is expanding its offerings for flights from Sacramento to popular vacation destinations like Maui, Santa Barbara, San Diego and Eugene, Oregon. The fuller schedule of multiple daily, non-stops flights begins on June 5. (Subscription: The Sacramento Bee and Southwest Airlines Media)
  3. Placer County Health and Human Services, our District Attorney’s Office and other community agencies are launching an awareness campaign on the dangers of fake prescription pills laced with fentanyl. The “1 Pill Can Kill You” campaign will educate teens, young adults and parents about the danger of procuring prescription pills from anywhere other than pharmacies. An event at Whitney High School in Rocklin on Friday, April 22 will feature speakers from several agencies and a parent who lost her son to a fentanyl overdose. (Placer County District 2)
  4. Ah, Spring is the season that makes all things new. We humans like to celebrate this fresh start with a vigorous spring cleaning … usually resulting in a hug pile of unwanted stuff. If you think your trash could be someone else’s treasure, keep in mind these safety tips from Roseville Police Public Information Officer Rob Baquera while you look to make a few bucks. (Roseville Today)
  5. Do you have a way with words? If so, give your inner bard a chance to shine by entering the 18th Annual Voices of Lincoln Poetry Contest. Don’t be deterred by the “Lincoln” distinction – wordsmiths from all over the region are invited to submit their work in this National Poetry Month event hosted by The Poets Club of Lincoln. There’s even a Young Poets category for youth 18 and under. This year’s theme: “People Are … Everything.” (Lincoln News Messenger)
