- Placer and Nevada County residents in the Colfax area wait anxiously as fire crews continue to battle the River Fire. Some wait from their homes while under evacuation warnings while others have already been evacuated and wait to see if they will have homes to return to. As of press time yesterday, the fire had burned 2,400 acres and destroyed 50 structures, most of them residences. The fire was still at 0% containment. A red flag warning was in effect until 9:00pm as firefighters anticipated wind gusts up to 35 mph to surface in the afternoon. (KCRA3 and various sources)
- Apparently, the City of Roseville Utility received a "lot of feedback" about the new mandatory 20% water restrictions beginning on August 9th. In response, they have created a page on their website called "Managing Drought" with detailed answers to some of the concerns posed by water customers. (City of Roseville Utility)
- Facing what they feared would be an avalanche of people put out of their housing during a new surge of COVID, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced a new moratorium on evictions on Tuesday. A previous extended moratorium had expired over last weekend. The new order expires on October 3rd and covers anyone living in what is considered an area of high COVID spread, or roughly 80% of U.S. counties and 90% of the population. Renters and landlords having trouble staying afloat can access help from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). (CBS News and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau)
- In happier news, the wayward injured bear cub who busted out of the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) center earlier this week was spotted in a tree by hikers in the area. The cub has been named Tamarack, after the fire where he was found. The wildlife rescue was encouraged to find Tamarack alive as he is too small to survive on his own in the wild and is recovering from his injuries. They were still working on getting the little stinker down as of press time yesterday. (CBS Sacramento)
- The Sacramento Kings organization has joined other business, healthcare and government entities who are requiring vaccinations for all their employees. The mandate includes the players. Other safety precautions are in place to protect fans who attend games at Golden 1 Center. Depending on seat location, fans may be asked to produce proof of vaccination or a resent negative COVID test. Facemasks are required for everyone inside the stadium. (FOX40)
