Here are the top five stories in Roseville today:
- Apparently, Rosevillians have a need for speed. In one instance the Roseville Police Department recorded a motorcyclist traveling at over 90 mph on a roadway with a posted speed limit of 45 mph. Nearby, on Tuesday in Lincoln, police record driver going 103 mph on a city street with a posted limit of 55 mph. “While sometimes speeds may vary, there is no excuse for such an unsafe speed,” the Lincoln Police Department wrote in a social media post. “Please be mindful of your safety and the safety of others on the roadway and follow the posted speed limits.” Need speed? Head out to the All American Speedway, instead! (KTXL FOX 40 Sacramento)
- Roseville Firefighters are currently assigned to two separate incidents in the state. Firefighters have been deployed to the Mountain Fire for the last two weeks and as of Tuesday another crew was assigned to the Mosquito Fire. Per Local 1592, "as we watch the Mosquito Incident grow in our backyard, Roseville Firefighters deploy with the dedication to do what we can to assist in the rapid mitigation of this fire." Thank you to our hometown heroes! (Roseville Firefighters Local 1592 via Facebook)
- Placer County's electorate is shifting. While still predominantly Republican, the tides have been shifting in recent years - and not necessarily to Democrat. The largest increase over the horizon is in the "Other/No Preference" category. In the last decade Republicans have lost 7 percentage points with voters and the "other" category has gained 5 of them. Regardless of makeup of the electorate, we continue to care a lot about our civic life. Ryan Ronco, Placer County Clerk-Recorder-Registrar of Voters shared that Placer County has the “6th highest turnout in California in the recall election and the highest turnout for counties over 150,000 registered voters.” He added that Placer County is “historically 10 to 15 percentage points above the California average turnout each major election.” (Roseville Today)
- In a press release, the city of Roseville announced "the City of Roseville is currently recruiting for high school students interested in serving as a youth representative on the City’s Library Board, Grants Advisory Commission, Parks & Recreation Commission, and Transportation Commission." If you know a youth that might be interested, the deadline to apply is October 21 by 4 p.m. They must be a resident of the City of Roseville and be in high school during their term. The term of office runs from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023. No special experience is necessary. Get more information about the specific boards and commissions here or call 916-774-5267. - There is a gorgeous grove of giant sequoias in Placer County that you may not be aware of, but they are significant. While it's a smaller grove than the neighbors to the south in Sequoia or Kings Canyon, this grove, called Big Trees Grove is generally considered to be the northernmost grove of the amazing giant sequoias. And it's at risk. It stands 20 miles east of Foresthill and the wildfire that is ravaging the area. Per Roseville Today, the fire is "headed in the direction of Big Trees Grove which presently sits in the evacuation warning zone not far from the fire lines." They will be publishing updates as they become available. (Roseville Today)
