Here are the top five stories today in Roseville:

  1. Roseville PD found themselves on the slowest pursuit on record as they closed in on Shredder the tortoise on Thursday. After the several steps it took to catch up to the fugitive reptile, they nabbed the apparent escapee at Hayden Parkway, near Fire Station 9. Upon inspection, they noticed a tag glued to his shell. According to Shredder's family, he is something of an escape artist. Shredder is now home safe with his family, planning his next cunning, if somewhat lethargic, escape. (CBS Sacramento)
  2. Twenty-one local non-profits were the beneficiaries of some benevolent planning ahead by the city of Roseville, its businesses and generous citizens. Two funds were established specifically for support of local non-profits. According to Roseville Today "The Citizens’ Benefit Fund was established in 1993 following the sale of the city-owned Roseville Hospital to Sutter Health for $14.8 million. The proceeds were placed in a trust and a portion of the interest earned each year is made available for grants with the purpose of improving the quality of life for the residents of Roseville." The REACH Fund is a community giving fund created through donations by Roseville employees and retirees. All of those funds are dispersed each year to local charitable organizations that serve youth, seniors and families in the South Placer County region." Between the two funds, $279,681 was presented to the local non-profits. (Roseville Today)
  3. Rocklin Councilman Joe Patterson resigned last month in order to pursue a run for State Assembly. On July 5 the Rocklin City Council took up a vote to determine whether to appoint an interim member. It had the choice to appoint someone or continue with just four members. With concerns over 2-2 votes and a gridlock in getting things done, the council voted to appoint a new member. That member will serve until the general election in November. No timeline for the appointment has been published. (Gold Country Media)
  4. The Roseville Police Department invites Roseville small business owners and managers to attend one of two upcoming Small Business Crime Prevention seminars. Each one day, five-hour seminar will cover some of the most important current issues that affect small businesses in our city .There are two seminars scheduled — one on Wednesday, August 24 and one on Wednesday, August 31. Both will start at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m., and will be at the Roseville Police Department at 1051 Junction Blvd. in the Mark White Community Room. Each will be limited to 25 attendees. 5. According to the City of Roseville Police Department Facebook page, on June 21, an RPD Officer was dispatched to a call reporting a possible check fraud at a bank in the 100 block of Sunrise Avenue. A search warrant was executed at a home in Granite Bay. Officers were able to find enough evidence to link Brandi Noschka of Granite Bay to multiple fraudulent checks. The total loss was almost $11,000. Noschka was booked into the South Placer Jail on charges of fraud/forgery and burglary.(City of Roseville, California Police Department via Facebook)
