🌱 Sierra State Of Emergency + Search Halted For Northstar Skier

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Roseville.

(Patch Media)

Happy New Year, Roseville!

It's a new year, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on in town this weekend.

First, the weekend weather:

It looks like we'll have a couple sunny days before clouds and rain are expected to return late on Monday. The highs will be in the mid-40s on Saturday and Sunday, with Monday a little warmer at around 54 degrees. Overnight lows will be in the low-30s on Saturday and Sunday, with Mondays overnight low a little higher at 47 degrees. Winds will be light all three days at about 3-9 mph and humidity will be in the 74%-80% range.

Here are the top five stories in Roseville today:

  1. With many of our Placer County neighbors going on their fifth day of no electricity after the recent snowstorms, Governor Gavin Newsom issued an emergency proclamation for 20 counties that will mobilize additional resources and support. Many folks in the snow regions of these counties are snowed in and running out of gasoline for the generators they depend on for heat and cooking. Massive snowfall, downed powerlines and downed trees have Pacific Gas & Electric and Caltrans scrambling to clear roads and restore power. Caltrans is expected to seek federal assistance for repairs and reconstruction of damaged highways. (CBS 13 and Gold Country Media)
  2. The Placer County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) made an announcement on Thursday that the search and rescue operation for missing skier Rory Angelotta has been suspended. It has been seven days since Angelotta went missing from the Northstar California Resort on Christmas Day. Hundreds of personnel hours and specialized equipment from 17 different agencies have been utilized in the search. "It has been determined there is no realistic possibility Rory has survived the severe winter conditions," PCSO posted on its social media. A recovery effort is planned for the resort area. (Placer County Sheriff's Office Facebook)
  3. California's National Guard Rattlesnake Task Force is joining Cal Fire and the Governor's Office of Emergency Services to clear roads in some of the hardest-hit communities in the Sierra. This will be a slight departure for the task force as it is usually focused on year-round prevention of forest fires. (ABC 10)
  4. Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue and the Washoe County Sheriff's Office Hasty Team received a $30,250 grant from The Tahoe Fund, a boon that will be used for critical equipment upgrades. The two search and rescue agencies responded to over 120 calls in 2021, working in the most hazardous of conditions. Having the most up-to-date equipment is key for these teams of EMTs, emergency room doctors and nurses, firefighters, ski patrollers, paramedics, and experienced backcountry skiers and snowmobilers, who all volunteer their time on rescue missions. (Roseville Today)
  5. While technically not "local" news, I've included this lovely tribute article on Betty White as we all mourn her passing yesterday, just shy of her 100th birthday. Thank you for all the great memories, dear lady. (FOX 40)
