Here are the top stories today in Roseville:
- The parent accused of tackling a referee at a Roseville youth soccer match in October plead not guilty to a battery charge Wednesday. Vicente Robles did not attend the court date, speaking instead through his lawyer, but the courtroom was filled with several local youth soccer referees wearing their uniforms. If convicted of the charge, Robles could potentially pay up to $2,000 in fines, spend up to one year in jail, or both. (KCRA 3)
- The deadline for the public to submit City of Roseville redistricting map proposals was Monday, but the process of redrawing our city election boundaries is far from over. There will be six public meetings in January where citizens can get more information and provide input on the proposed maps. The Independent Redistricting Commission is expected to make a final decision at its meeting on January 24th. Be informed and get involved! You can check out the proposed maps and learn more about the redistricting process on the City's website, through this link. (Press Release Desk)
- U.S. News & World Report has expanded its annual Best Hospitals report to include a subcategory for Best Hospitals for Maternity. Prospective parents can use the rankings to choose the best places to give birth, taking into account data on scheduled early deliveries, C-section rates in low-risk women, newborn complications, rate of exclusive breast milk feeding and option for vaginal births after cesarean (VBAC). Out of the 2,700 hospitals nationwide that offer maternity services, two local hospitals made the 237 cut to earn spots in the rankings: U.C. Davis Medical Center at #7 and Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento at #42. (U.S. News & World Report)
- If you found yourself adrift in cyberspace Wednesday (translation: experiencing internet connectivity problems), you were not alone as numerous companies and organizations across the nation scrambled to deal with outages caused by problems with Amazon Web Services (AWS). I was right there with you, trying to compile and post your Roseville Daily, folks! AWS reported it had "mitigated" the underlying issues about five hours after the initial problems surfaced, but it took several more hours for some users of the service to recover. AWS determined the outage was caused by "an impairment of several network devices." (Patch.com)
- A day "in the city" is going to cost you an extra dollar, or two depending on what route you take, as tolls are scheduled to rise on several Bay Area bridges starting January 1st, 2022. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael and San Mateo-Hayward Bridges' tolls will rise to $7 per trip. The good news is that penalties for toll violations will be lower in 2022, not that any of us good citizens would need to worry about that. (CBS 13)

From my notebook:
- Shawarma Stackz, the new modern Middle Eastern street food restaurant at 1132 Galleria Boulevard is open! Its "soft opening" hours so far are 11:00 am-7:00 pm, Wednesday-Sunday. The pictures on the website look amazing, so you might see Mr. Risse and me sampling the goods if you stop in this week. (Website)
- The countdown to Saturday's Santa Hustle is on. Hundreds of faux Santas will mob Roseville streets in the name of fun and good cheer with proceeds going to Stand Up Placer. If you, like me, are not a "runner," sign up to be a race volunteer! At press time Wednesday, the Santa Hustle still needed about 25 "elves" to help out. It's easy, it's free and you get some of that sweet, sweet Santa swag. (Press Update)
- Congratulations to Class 22-3 on its graduation Wednesday from the Sierra College Fire Academy! And, by the way, did you notice you already have a job offer in the comments of your social media post? You are obviously appreciated and needed by all of us in NorCal. (Instagram)
- Adopting a letter to Santa through the U.S. Postal Service helps brings joy to needy children around the country. And it makes you an official Santa’s helper! Check out the details of Operation Santa, browse the letters on the website and see if one speaks to you. (Twitter)
- The turning of the year is a popular time for marriage proposals. Some people make quite an epic thing of this rite of passage, while others take a more low-key approach (side-eyeing you, Mr. Risse). Good Day Sacramento is feeling the nostalgia and wants you to send in your marriage proposal photos. Whether amazing or amusing, viewing these is sure to be fun! (Twitter)
