First, today's weather:

We can expect sunny skies and a high of 72 degrees and an overnight low of 53. Winds are forecast to be light and variable at about 3-12 mph and humidity should remain high at about 83% during the day. Yup, it's Autumn in the 'Ville!

Here are the top stories today in Roseville:

  1. Family Fun Night is the happening Halloween event tonight in Old Roseville along Vernon Street. The street will be blocked off between Taylor and Lincoln Streets for a parade of decorated cars carrying drive-thru trick-or-treaters (sorry, those tickets are sold out), but you can still enjoy all the Halloween offerings from the local businesses. For example, the Roseville Masons will have hands-on activities, vendor booths, live entertainment, costume contests, a haunted house and trick-or-treating. School of Rock’s house band, Hazmat, is performing. The Fig Tree Coffee Lounge will have live music by Silver Linings. The fun happens from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and, I’m guessing, the attire is costumes! (Downtown Roseville Partnership and various social media sources)
  2. Ski bunnies, dust off your goggles and wax those snowboards! Palisades at Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley) is opening this weekend - a full month earlier than usual, thanks to last weekend’s whopper of a snowstorm. It will be only the third time in 72 years of operation that the resort has opened its slopes in October. And, because its Halloween weekend, visitors are encouraged to come in costume! Extra points for Yeti costumes? (CBS 13) In a side note, tickets just went on sale for the annual WinterWonderGrass California music, brews and overall good vibes festival at Palisades scheduled for April 1-3, 2022. Get yours tickets before they’re gone! (Roseville Today)
  3. The pandemic took a toll on just about everyone in one way or another. The Placer County Office of Education and the Placer County Children’s System of Care partnered to serve the mental health needs of students as they returned to in-person education this academic year. What they didn’t know is that those steps would prove beneficial in building wellness for their students in other areas as well. The new Wellness Centers on several Placer County school campuses are helping students cope with issues like pandemic anxiety, depression and bullying. There are now ten schools with Wellness Centers serving children from kindergarten through high school (six are in Roseville), where students can walk in any time for a needed “wellness break.” (County of Placer Press Release)
  4. “If it’s on Facebook, it must be true.” NOT! While most of social media is harmless entertainment, some posts contain bad advice, presented as “true,” that can actually be deadly. The latest misinformation making the rounds on social media involves changing your voicemail on your mobile device to a distress message if lost in the wilderness. Our friends at ABC 10 News got the real scoop on what you should do from some reliable experts – an Alpine Rescue Team based in the Rocky Mountains. According to them, turning on your phone’s location services and texting or calling 9-1-1 is your best bet. Find out why in this informative (for real!) article. (ABC 10)

  • Does public speaking frighten you more than any Halloween creepy-crawly? Don’t let your fear hold you back any longer! Our local Toastmasters are having a Fall Open House tonight where you can check out the organization that has helped gazillions of people improve their public speaking game. The event is free with registration and timed so you can pop in on a lunch break. Noon - 1:00 pm

Roseville Patch Notebook:

  • Are you starting to feel like you could be featured on an episode of Hoarders? Is stuff piling up in your garage, closets and any other available horizontal surface? Or maybe you’re the creative type with crafts to sell ('tis that season!). Sign up now to sell your STUFF at the St. Clare Church Parking Lot Sale on November 6th! Only $20 gets you a space, including room for your vehicle, and a large crowd to hawk your wares to. To reserve a space, send an email to StClareParkingLotSale@gmail.com. Easy cheesy!
  • While other departments around the country are still talking about it, our Roseville Police have developed a partnership between police officers, a police licensed social worker, Placer County homeless outreach advocates and crisis response teams to create a Social Services Unit (SSU). This partnership enables our police to offer a holistic approach and lasting solutions when encountering complex situations. Read about one such encounter here. (Facebook)
  • Uh oh! It looks our libraries have received so many book donations that the Friends of the Roseville Public Library (FOL) needs more volunteers to help review, sort and manage them. A great problem to have, indeed! Book donations supplement the libraries’ offerings and provide revenue from the used book sales. If you have a couple of hours to spare on Wednesdays from 10:00 am to noon, hit up the FOL at friends@rosevillefol.org or register online at www.rosevillefol.org. (Instagram)
  • Still looking for that perfect pumpkin to take your porch décor to the next level? Check out this blog on the Visit Placer website for a comprehensive list of the best pumpkin patches in our area. And, I admit, I included this post because I really love the photo. So. Much. Orange! (Instagram)
  • After you've found your perfect pumpkin (see above) and are ready to snuggle down at home with some hot spiced cider, you can refer to this helpful list from Andrew JM Garcia, a local radio journalist who recently shared his recommendations for spooky Halloween music and movies on Cap Radio's Insight. Happy haunting! (Twitter)
