First, today's weather:
Gloomy skies will likely bust out some rain on us later today — and dump some long overdue snow on the Sierra. The expected high today is 55 degrees with an overnight low of 48. Winds should be in the 6-8 mph range and humidity is expected to be a whopping 91% during the day.

Here are the top stories in Roseville today:
- Roseville’s award-winning Nixtaco was recently targeted by a thief who made off with the restaurant’s smoker. Local police thought they had a good lead on the suspect, who left a cyber trail by posting the smoker on Facebook Marketplace. Unfortunately, a sting operation set up by Roseville Police was unsuccessful. Investigators are still on the case, according to RPD spokesperson Rob Baquera. (CBS 13)
- The creative citizens and groups of Roseville have been hard at work building gingerbread houses and decorating trees. Now it’s time to vote on your favorites! Hopefully, you had a chance to visit Downtown Roseville last week during the three days of the Holiday Celebration: the Tree Grove, Tree Lighting and North Pole Tavern. If you didn’t, I highly recommend getting down to Vernon Street Town Square one evening this month to see the beautiful City Holiday Tree and all the entries in the Tree Grove. It is a sight that will warm even the Grinch-iest heart! Voting for the Tree Grove and Gingerbread House contest ends Thursday, December 9th! (What’s Happening in Roseville and Facebook)
- A new food delivery company has entered the Sacramento region with a novel concept. Craveble delivers cold, prepared, vacuum-packed, microwavable meals from local restaurants to your door via a weekly order plan that you set up. So, you order on Tuesday and get your order for the week on Friday. The service is still adding new restaurants all the time and is expected to bring on the Roseville Meat Market soon. If you decide to try out Craveble (I know I am!), be sure to use the promo code “FOX40” for 20% off your first order. (FOX 40)
- I’m not sure if we can officially call it a side-effect of COVID-19, but U.C. Davis Heath physician Dr. Brandee Waite has seen an increase in workout related injuries since people have returned to the gym following the pandemic lockdown. Many, like Bob Tetz of East Sacramento, jumped back hard into his former exercise regimen, eager to lose the 20 lbs. he gained over the months at home. He ended up needing a UCD Health Sports Medicine program to recover. Waite’s advice: "If you haven’t exercised in a long time, you do need to take it slow." (KCRA 3)
- Christmas lights and open flame candles are pretty and add to the festive atmosphere during the holiday season, but caution is a must if you plan to make them part of your celebratory décor. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has gathered up a few safety tips for us in this brief, easy-to-read flier so we can all keep our Yuletide merry and bright. (NFPA.org)

From my notebook:
- “Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, right down …” your street! The Big Guy is in the 'Ville and making the rounds as part of the City of Roseville’s Neighborhood Santa event. He’s got our Roseville Police and Firefighters as escorts, his helpers are handing out treats and he’s flying his souped up airplane! Be sure to check out the schedule on the City’s webpage so you don’t miss him! (Instagram)
- The gloomy weather of winter is perfect for cozy hours spent cuddled up with a good book. Two things book lovers yearn for: solid what-to-read-next book suggestions and a group to discuss those literary works with. Our Roseville Public Library has it covered (pun intended) with two book clubs to choose from! The Page Turners are currently reading The Dutch House, by Anne Patchett while Club Maidu is making their way through Native Son, by Richard Wright. Both clubs will meet for discussion at the Maidu Library (Page Turners 10:30am-noon; Club Maidu 12:30pm-2:00pm) on January 8th. (Experience PRL)
- Our local Dick’s Sporting Goods spread some good cheer recently by donating a big bunch of assorted sports balls to the Roseville Police Activities League (RPAL). The officers, and the kiddos they serve through RPAL, will be sure to have a ball with this generous gift! (Instagram)
- After a brief closure and reconfiguration of their business model, A Part Café is back and offering its delicious, eclectic fare for catering service. Just in time for your holiday gatherings! (Facebook)
- This is the triumphant smile of GOAT! San Francisco 49er George Kittle scored FIVE touchdowns over the team’s last five games. Way to go, George! (Twitter)
