Here are the top five stories today in Roseville:

  1. According to Roseville Police an 18-year-old driver who may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol slammed into a power pole on Vernon Street on Friday, causing a power outage for thousands of Roseville residents. Vernon Street, between Dudley and 5th Street, was closed for nearly an hour as crews dealt with the mess. The condition of the driver has not been released, but charges are being forwarded to the Placer County District Attorney’s Office. (CBS News)
  2. A new dessert restaurant called Tokyo Cream is set to open in Roseville this weekend. It has soft serve yogurt and crispy cream puffs, among other confections. During the soft opening on Saturday and Sunday, it will offer a free boba milk tea with any order over $10. I'll take the black sesame swirl ice cream cone and the boba sundae, please. Tokyo Cream is located at 1906 Taylor Road in Roseville. (ABC10.com KXTV)
  3. The Rocklin City Council has chosen its interim member to serve until the next election. The council unanimously appointed longtime Rocklin resident and businessman Paul Ruhkala to fill the vacancy. Ruhkala has a long history in business and public service in Rocklin. The Ruhkala surname is a well-known name in Rocklin, because the family has been in the granite industry there since the 1800s. Ruhkala has also served on many commissions and agencies and associations for the city. He will serve until the certification of the Special Election on November 8, wherein a candidate will be elected to fill the position. Ruhkala is not running in the election. (Roseville Today)
  4. Ace WWII U.S. Navy pilot Dean “Diz” Laird of Loomis has died. He was 101. “It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to a wonderful pilot and patriot,” the California Aerospace Museum wrote in a social media post on Thursday. “Dean Samuel Laird, also known as Diz Laird, was the only U.S. Navy ace to have combat victories in both the Pacific and European theaters of World War II.” Laird also was inducted into the International Air and Space Hall of Fame in 2013 for his distinguished service and he received the congressional medal of honor in 2015. (KTXL FOX 40 Sacramento)
  5. Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties will test the Regional Mass Notification System on August 25. If you have opted in, you will receive a message. The alert will display as "833-422-5253" and will be delivered via the device you have registered. The exception is for landlines. All landlines will receive the alert, regardless of opt in status. To register, visit PlacerAlert.org. Gold Country Media has the following important notice: "Verizon Wireless customers will notice a misspelling from the caller ID that says “Sacremento” – this is NOT spam. The misspelling occurred when Verizon Wireless set up the tri-county account. Sacramento County’s Office of Emergency Services continues to work with Verizon to correct the issue." Oops — apparently, Verizon doesn't have the fantastic editing staff that Patch does. (Gold Country Media)
