Here are the top five stories in Roseville today:

  1. After a five-hour long hearing, the Placer County parole board decided to deny parole for Daniel Bezemer for three years. Bezemer was convicted of the strangulation and murder of Justine Vanderschoot in 2003. Bezemer, Vanderschoot's then boyfriend, received a sentence of 25 years to life. This was Bezemer's first parole hearing since he was sent to prison. His accomplice, Brandon Fernandez, was also denied parole on July 28. (Roseville Today)
  2. A man has been arrested on suspicion of robbing a homeless woman in a parking lot on Sunrise, near Cirby on August 5. The man was identified as Sean John of Sacramento. John told police where the belongings could be found before he was booked into the Placer County Jail. Authorities are still looking for a second suspect. (KTXL FOX 40 Sacramento)
  3. Roseville is getting a new roundabout. It will be at the center of Washington, Lincoln and All America City Boulevard. Construction is set to start on Monday, August 15. The roundabout should help traffic flow in the area and make the area more pedestrian and bike friendly, with new sidewalks and paths. These roundabout things are popping up everywhere! Eventually, I'm going to have to figure out how to navigate them. To me, they feel like one of those merry-go-round things when you were a kid that you just kind of had to close your eyes and jump off and hope for the best. (ABC10.com KXTV)
  4. Quarry Trail Elementary in Rocklin is open for students this year, and hundreds are attending. The elementary school is the first "dual immersion" school in Rocklin, meaning students can learn in English and Spanish. The goal is that students will be bilingual within a couple of years of starting instruction there. There is a waitlist to get into la escuela. (KCRA Sacramento)
  5. One of our Roseville heroes is serving as a damage controlman during the largest international maritime warfare exercise, Rim of the Pacific, according to the Navy Office of Community Outreach. Enochs High grad and United States Navy Petty Second Officer Sarah Purto is serving as a firefighter on the ship. Part of her duty is also to train others how to fire fight and respond to other challenges such as flooding and repair work. "My father has always taught me to push through when things get tough. That helps me always get up and keep going when things get tough,” Purto said. Purto embarked on the exercise at the end of June and completed the program last week. (Gold Country Media)
