Here are the top stories in Roseville today:

  1. Visitors, campers and tourists are urged to stay away from the Tahoe area and surrounding forests this weekend as the Caldor Fire inches closer to the Tahoe Basin from the southwest. Highway 50 is closed for a 50 mile stretch between Pollock Pines and Meyers, closing off one of the few escape routes Tahoe residents will have in the event of an evacuation. The blaze was only 12% contained as of press time yesterday, with wind gusts expected to aggravate the situation over the weekend. (CBS 13)
  2. "He was the most loving father and loving grandfather" are not words one would tend to associate with notorious mobster Al Capone, yet this is how his granddaughter, and Placer County resident, Diane Capone, describes him as the Capone descendants prepare to auction off 174 of his personal belongings. The live auction, which is expected to generate international interest, will take place on October 8 at the Sutter Club in Sacramento. Limited seating will be by lottery and invitation only, with live bidding open to registered participants online and by phone.
  3. There were 180,000 new cases of COVID-19 in children reported last week in the United States, more than four times the cases reported for the week ending on July 22 just one month ago, according to data from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital Association. While children under 17 make up 22.5% of the population in California, they currently account for 13.7% of COVID cases in the state, according to the California Department of Public Health. Over half of eligible children age 12-17 in California have received at least one dose of the vaccine. (KCRA 3)
  4. My fellow Californians, did you know that it is not too late to register to vote in September 14th's Gubernatorial Recall Election? The last is official day is Monday, August 30th. You can register online from where you're sitting right now. Don't sit on the sidelines, my friends - your vote counts! (Registertovote.ca.gov)
