Here are the top stories in Roseville today:
- As mentioned above in the weather section, Northern California is expecting a significant storm tonight through Tuesday, precipitating (pun intended) a Flood Watch for the lower elevations (like Roseville) and a Winter Storm Watch for the Sierra. Dang, NorCal can't seem to catch a break this year! Be sure to check real-time information, especially if travelling, this weekend. Here are a couple good resources for you. (US National Weather Service Sacramento Facebook and Weather.gov)
- Sometimes, having the "higher ground" is an advantage. Officer Jeff Kozak and Officer Jonathon Gee of the Rocklin Police responded to a call where a woman had fallen and was unable to get up in the upper story of her house. The ground floor doors were deadbolted and the windows were securely locked, making entry to the home near impossible. Luckily, Officer Kozak's height of 6-foot-10 enabled him to leap the tall building in a single bound. Well, actually, he jumped to the second floor balcony from the roof of the RPD cruiser and rescued the distressed damsel. And yes, there are pics! (CBS Sacramento)
- When the COVID-19 pandemic hit us around March 2020, pausing in-person gatherings, one local non-profit serving families dealing with cancer had to think fast. Before the lock-down, the Me-One Foundation, started in 2007 by Tom and Heidi Weiser of Roseville, organized weekend retreats in the Santa Cruz mountains for families dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Patients going through cancer treatment are especially vulnerable to any kind of illness, making the pandemic lock-down especially isolating for these families. Thus was born the Me-One Staycation. Volunteer teams bring care packages and allow the family to hang out safely in their home, offering support and a needed break from cancer worries. Coincidentally, our friends at Style Magazine ran a profile of Erica Pope, Me-One's Director of Development, in its latest issue. (CBS 13 and Style Magazine)
- After hundreds of hours of intense training, the newest class of K9 officers and their human partners are ready to go out and fight crime in California. Graduating from the California Highway Patrol Academy in West Sacramento, these ten new teams will join 38 existing teams around the state performing jobs like explosive detection, narcotics detection and finding missing/at-risk persons. Read more about their training and mission in this informative article. Who's a Good Boy? These doggos! (Gold Country Media)
- College basketball players from two area schools are teaming up, doing what they do best, to raise money for victims of the Dixie Fire that ravaged a large portion of Northern California for the last four months. The Aggies of U.C. Davis will go head to head with the Warriors of William Jessup University at Jessup's Rocklin campus on October 30th, with proceeds from the $25 ticket price going to the Red Cross Dixie Fire fund. The event, the first time a NCAA school has played at the Rocklin campus, is hoped to bring in about $50,000 and will provide a night of great basketball to the community. Besides the libations, Trax will have "basic house food" like burgers, tacos and sandwiches. (Twitter)
