First, today's weather:

It's looking like another balmy, partially cloudy day in the 'Ville today. Some of those clouds will most likely start raining on us later this evening, so bring an umbrella! The expected high is 71 degrees with an overnight low of 58. Winds remain light today at about 5-8 mph and humidity should be around 75% during the day.

Here are the top stories in Roseville today:

  1. The City of Roseville has tackled the challenge of revitalizing the downtown areas since strategies were approved in the 2008 specific plan. Wayne Wiley, our Economic Development Manager for the city, gave an update to News 10 on how the groundwork has been laid, and how the city is moving forward on several projects. (ABC 10)
  2. For all my people who love watching acrobatic fish (and who doesn't?), I’m going to give you the bad news first: The visitors’ center at the Nimbus Fish Hatchery in Gold River will remain closed to the public through the 2021 Chinook salmon spawning season. The good news is that the scenic trial, ADA accessible viewing platform for the American River and (best of all) the improved fish ladder with new underwater windows is open for November and December. For a deeper dive (pun intended) into the life cycle of our fish friends, there are also free webinars on how the hatchery harvests salmon eggs to ensure future generations. (KCRA 3 and Facebook)
  3. Did you know that, among other things, November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month? Often thought of as a smokers’ disease, lung cancer can strike anyone with lungs. It is often called the “silent killer” as noticeable symptoms don’t usually show up in the early stages, when cancer treatment is most effective. Learn more in this first-person perspective article. Roseville Patch Notebook:

  • If you still have Halloween candy left and don’t want it ruining your girlish figure, do something patriotic with it by donating it to the local Blue Star Moms. Your excess sweets will be sent in care packages to our military personnel on deployment. You can also drop off candy at the front office of Junction Elementary School for its military donation efforts. (Facebook and Facebook)
  • Halloween 2021 is over – so it’s time to start thinking about the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Our Roseville Parks, Recreation & Events department is taking applications now for tree decorators, crafters, and food/beverage vendors for the upcoming city events. It’s also time to sign up for the Gingerbread House Competition for all you creative types. (Facebook)
  • In what must have been one of its more unusual calls, Roseville Police recently responded to a report of a mink stuck in a piece of PVC pipe. Not a mink coat, mind you, but a cute little furry animal. They gave a shout out to Atlantic Street Veterinary Hospital for assisting in the rescue and took a moment to remind us all that feeding wildlife, while well-meaning, ultimately puts our furry neighbors in danger. Happy trails, little guy! (Facebook)
  • Deer Creek Farm reopens today with all its unique, awesome holiday merchandise! It's been closed the past two days to get the festive stock on the shelves – that’s how much stuff it has! The best part: proceeds from the store, which is run by Compassion Planet, supports former foster kids in our area as they make their way into adulthood. (Instagram)
  • Today is the last day to cast your vote for the 2021 MiLBY Awards. The MiLBYs celebrate the best moments in several categories from the Minor League Baseball season. Confession: I did not make it through the “Best Feel-Good Moment” videos with dry eyes, especially the one featuring a standing ovation for Sacramento River Cat Drew Robinson at his last game as a player. Watch at your own risk! (Twitter)
