Here are the top five stories in Roseville today:

  1. As of the Sunday morning briefing, the Mosquito fire was just over 41,000 acres and was about 10% contained. Overnight on Saturday night, firefighters were able to make meaningful progress in the area of the community of Foresthill. Cooler temps and higher humidity reportedly helped in the effort. However, according to Cal Fire's incident page "an increase in winds has continued the fire’s spread to the north and north east." (Gold Country Media)
  2. The Sierra College Wolverines picked up their first win of the season against Fresno City College in a 31-28 victory. Most of the battle was in the hard-fought second half of the game, where the Wolverines initially increased their lead to 14-0, but that was quickly answered with a 21-yard touchdown by Fresno. The third quarter ended 17-14 in favor of our Wolverines. The Wolverines dominated the fourth quarter for a score of 31-14 with just 4 minutes of play left in the game. But the Fresno Rams kept fighting. They passed for a 63-yard touchdown and then, after an onside kick, set up for another 69-yard touchdown with only 2 minutes left to go in the game. But it just wasn't quite enough and Sierra held on to win. (Gold Country Media)
  3. In a Facebook plea for help, Scott Alvord is looking for cool places to house evacuee kitties. "Do you have a business or air conditioned shop or any space to take in some cats that are being rescued from the Mosquito Fire? FieldHaven Cat Rescue is receiving cats faster than it can find space for them. They are contained in cages and will be 100% cared for by FieldHaven volunteers. If you can help please contact Joy Smith at +1 (916) 300-8166," Alvord said.
  4. According to a Placer County press release, “you’re invited to witness how 'Recovery Happens' on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Recreation Park, 123 Recreation Drive in Auburn. This annual family-friendly event celebrates substance use and mental health recovery, highlighting the success of local community members. Resources about treatment and recovery programs will be available." There will be resources and information booths to support those in recovery and their friends and families. The event will also include food, music, games and more activities. “We’ve seen increasing need for substance use and mental health services,” said Amy Ellis, director of Placer County’s Adult System of Care. “This event will help connect people to a wide array of county and community partner resources – and it will also help people connect to others who are walking or have walked the same path.” All are encouraged to attend. 5. With the heat wave finally behind us, it's time to think about fall and pumpkins, Roseville! The popular, family-friendly Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm opened this weekend in Wheatland. Fun activities include a corn maze, a petting zoo, a carousel, a zip line and even a movie night on the weekends! It's about a half hour ride from Roseville, but for the fun of the season and a few pumpkins for decorating and roasting, it's more than worth it! (Roseville Today)
