🌱 Wreath Day At RSVL Cemetery A Success + Folsom Dam Release?

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Roseville.

(Patch Media)

Hey, neighbors!

It's me again, Kelly Risse, your host of The Roseville Daily. It may be cold and drizzly today, and you may feel like hibernating (no judgement here!), but there's stuff you need to know, so ...

Let's get to it!

First, today's weather:

Cloudy skies are likely to rain on us a little today in the 'Ville. The expected (not so) high is 47 degrees with an overnight low of 40. Winds should be light at about 5-15 mph and the humidity looks like 76% during the day.

Here are the top five stories in Roseville today:

  1. Hundreds of Roseville residents, including several local Boy and Girl Scout troops and city leaders, met up at Roseville Cemetery on Saturday, joining over 2,700 other cemetery groups across the country, for National Wreaths Across America Day. The day honors fallen service people from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces as volunteers lay wreaths on their graves. Community sponsorship was key to providing the 1,008 wreaths for the ceremony, covering a little less than half the veteran graves in the cemetery. Claire Alway, one of the pioneers of the Roseville project, has set a goal to raise enough funds for 2,000 wreaths for next year's event. Read on to learn more about the event. (Gold Country Media)
  2. Two officers will be fired and ten other employees at the California State Prison, Sacramento (CSPSAC) will be disciplined in connection to a months-long investigation into the deaths of two former guards after they made claims of harassment, hazing and corruption at the facility. The decision comes from the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. SCPSAC is located adjacent to Folsom State Prison. (Subscription: Sacramento Bee)
  3. Tons of snow and (atmospheric) rivers of rain have been a sight for sore eyes to drought-weary Northern Californians this week. So, the drought is over, right? Well, not so fast. See where we stand and learn why our water authority is releasing water from Folsom Dam this week (!) in this informative update. (KCRA 3)
  4. The new maps detailing 52 congressional districts, 40 state Senate districts, 80 Assembly districts and four Board of Equalization districts have been handed off to California’s Secretary of State, Shirley Weber. The California Citizens Redistricting Commission finally ended months of work on the new district maps that, baring any legal challenges, "will govern congressional and legislative elections for the next 10 years." (CBS Sacramento)
  5. We're number one - but it's not cause to celebrate. California is the first state in the U.S. to record more than five million infections of coronaviraus, according to the dashboard at the California Department of Public Health. Being one of the most populous states at 40 million residents could have something to do with reaching this dubious distinction ahead of the pack. Although COVID-related hospitalizations rose 12% over the last week in the state, we are still at less than a third of the national rate for new cases per 100,000 people. The newest omicron variant appears to spread more quickly than previous strains and is expected to become the primary strain in early 2022. (FOX40)
