Here are the top stories today in Roseville:

  1. Holiday shopping traffic has returned to pre-pandemic shutdown levels in South Placer County, even exceeding them in some cases. Good news for all the brick and mortar retailers in the area and the municipal coffers benefiting from all those tax dollars. The busiest areas, around the Roseville Galleria and Creekside Town Center, are getting a hand from the Roseville Public Works Traffic Operations Center to keep that traffic running smoothly. (Gold Country Media)
  2. Our Roseville Public Library is one of the jewels of our city. You can help keep it the wonderful community resource that it is by serving on the Library Board. Applicants must be over 18 years of age and be able to attend meetings on the fourth Monday of odd numbered months. Thursday, December 23rd at 5:00pm is the deadline to apply online. (City of Roseville)
  3. There’s an interesting story behind holiday animatronics on display at Frosty’s Enchanted Forest in the Roseville Galleria. Joshua Darling has been collecting Hamberger animated display pieces for many years to feed his “obsession with Christmas,” and has found this outlet to share them with all of us! The cheerful little characters are about 99 years old and harken back to the days when major department stores would go all out with their holiday window displays. Proceeds from the nominal entry fee benefit the Placer SPCA. (ABC10.com KXTV)
  4. The California Redistricting Commission, not to be confused with Roseville’s or Placer County’s redistricting commissions, has come under fire from some legislators and political strategists, not only for the legislative maps it's working on, but for allegedly holding secret meetings, not attending public input meetings and misusing its funds. There has already been one petition filed with the state Supreme Court by five Republican voters looking for more transparency on “past racially polarized voting” and how the commission complies with the Voting Rights Act. (Patch.com)
  5. If at least some of your holiday shopping is being done online, you may be concerned about how to keep your parcels and mail safe. Our friends at Roseville Today consulted the U.S. Postal Service for some great tips to keep the porch pirates and mailbox marauders at bay. (Roseville Today)

From my notebook:

  • Give the gift that keeps on growing this Christmas – a houseplant! Our friends at Green Acres Nursery & Supply have put together this video to help you choose which plants make the best gifts. (Facebook)
  • An appreciative, nature-loving Roseville resident reached out to the City of Roseville to note the improved condition of Dry Creek following the City’s restoration efforts that took place a few months ago. A “frequent walker” in the area at Saugstad Park, this observant citizen has seen salmon and turkeys enjoying the creek’s improvements as well. (Facebook)
  • Placer County Deputies highlighted the value of our K9 officers in subduing uncooperative subjects in a non-lethal way in this post Thursday. An encounter just this week ended peaceably thanks to Officer Ronin, one of the agency’s star four-legged partners. Good boy, Officer Ronin! Read the whole story here. (Facebook)
  • Our Roseville Chamber of Commerce gave a big “thank you” to all who donated toys at their recent Chamber Breakfast. The toys will be wrapped and donated to The Alliance and Lost but Not Forgotten, two local charities that support children and families. (Instagram)
  • Our neighbors in the Rocklin Fire Department responded to help a person who had fallen from a ladder, you guessed it, while hanging Christmas lights. After the subject was transported by ambulance, the fire crew stayed and finished the Christmas lights. The patient made out okay with minor injuries and a decorated house! (Facebook)

That's it for today! I'll be in the wilderness this weekend - no internet to be found - so our good friend, Jeri Karges from The Sacramento Daily, is going to help you out with what you need to know in the weekend edition of The Roseville Daily tomorrow. I'll be back with you on Tuesday!

Kelly Risse

About me: About me: My name is Kelly Mays Risse, and I have lived in Roseville just about all my life. I graduated from Roseville High School and majored in Journalism at CSU Sacramento. My husband and I loved growing up and raising our three boys here in the 'Ville. I have watched Roseville evolve from a cheerful little railroad town to a large and diverse city. I love where we live, from the hiking trails to the hip new restaurants, and I love the people who live here. I am excited to bring the highlights to you in The Roseville Daily!
