🌱Amador Grapes A-Plenty + Sierra Couple Rescued + Schuck Mondays

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

(Patch Media)

Hey, Sacramento! It's Monday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on today in town.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny. High: 68 Low: 35.

Here are the top stories today in Sacramento:

We're going to travel out of Sac County and up Hwy 50 for a few of our stories today. Why not? It's a pretty day for a drive.

  1. If you're wondering how the recent weather and pandemic have impacted the wine growers in Amador, "It's not so much a recovery from the pandemic as much as it is recovery from oversupply in the grape market," Jeff Bitter president of Fresno-based Allied Grape Growers said last week during the State of the Industry event at the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium in Sacramento. Grape growers produced 4 million tons or more each year from 2016 to 2019, leading to a market glut. Short crops in 2020 and 2021 "brought us back into a balance situation," he said. So, right now, the forecast is "stable" for the industry, but that could change. Between the supply chain problems and upcoming ban on agricultural burning, and the status of the drought, supply could dwindle over the coming years. So, if you're used to your Lava Cap wine prices being stable to down over time, you might want to rethink that model in the coming years. (Sierra Sun Times)
  2. Those that plan on traveling to or from the foothills and the Sierra using Highway 50 this week can expected delays during the daytime hours. Construction activity for the Camino Safety Project will require blocking westbound left turns onto the highway from Camino Heights Drive. The project will extend the concrete median barrier in the acceleration lane at the Camino Heights Drive intersection, which will block left turns onto westbound Highway 50 Monday through Friday, Feb. 7-11, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The median will be extended about 10 feet and a permanent crash absorption system will be installed. 3. Two people who were looking after a cabin in the remote Sierras were rescued this week after being snowed in for two months and facing a dwindling food supply, officials said Friday. The unidentified couple called the Sierra County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday morning, asking to be rescued from a cabin in a northwestern part of the county, about two hours north of Sacramento. The Sheriff's Office asked the highway patrol to airlift the couple and their small dog. CHP released video showing a helicopter flying near the home and said, "H-20 was able to land near the cabin, while very strong winds were blowing." The couple was then reunited with friends, officials said. (CBS Sacramento)
  4. Sacramento councilmember Katie Valenzuela, Mayor Darrell Steinberg's team, city management and the Midtown & East Sacramento Advocates (MESA) held a community discussion at McKinley Park Saturday morning for community feedback on how best to respond to homelessness. The crowd of over 100 voiced their opinions Saturday, in which many were openly opposed to the addition of a city dedicated area for homeless camps near East Sacramento and Midtown. The city and crowd agreed on the need to find a solution to provide resources for those experiencing homelessness in Sacramento, but where to provide those resources was a point of contention. The heated discussion led some in the crowd to ask whether the proposal of an encampment site for the unsheltered at Sutter's Landing was appropriate. Many of those in attendance opposed the location, pointing toward Miller Park where 60 tented sites have been created to house those experiencing homelessness. (KCRA3)
  5. Two Sacramento brothers were arrested for child sex crimes on Thursday, said the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. According to a news release, the two brothers are Israel Manalang and Hector Canlas Manalang, both Sacramento residents. They were arrested on 15 felony counts of Lewd or Lascivious Acts with a Child under 14 years of age and 2 felony counts of Lewd Acts Using Force/Violence/Duress. They are scheduled in court today.
