📰 News we're reading

1. Sacramento ordered to pay $32.1M to family of men killed by detective in I-5 crash (sacbee.com) — Sacramento has been ordered to pay $32.1 million to the children of a man killed when a city police detective’s car hit him and his brother on I-5 near Sutterville Road. Jurors decided damages after the city admitted liability, and the detective previously received a short jail sentence, prompting outrage from the victims’ family.

2. Channel 24 marks first year in Midtown Sacramento with praise from neighbors, businesses (kcra.com) — A new music venue in Midtown’s Newton Booth neighborhood, Channel 24, is celebrating its first year with strong support from nearby residents and businesses in Sacramento. Neighbors report minimal noise issues, while local shops say the venue boosts foot traffic. The club is adding a new VIP area with local food and craft beer, plus a comedy show this weekend.

3. Community celebrates Tahoe Park basketball court's first upgrade in 50 years (fox40.com) — Newly resurfaced basketball courts and fresh safety upgrades are drawing neighbors back to Tahoe Park in Sacramento, where a $100,000 investment also added trees and improved the horseshoe pit and nearby roads. Residents, city leaders and local businesses launched a monthly food truck series and council office hours that will run every fourth Friday through October.

4. East Sacramento groups appeal six-story apartment building plans (kcra.com) — East Sacramento neighbors are challenging a proposed six-story, 332-unit apartment project on Alhambra Boulevard, sending the issue to the Sacramento City Council next week. Supporters say it will add needed housing, while opponents argue it’s too large for the neighborhood. Councilmembers will hear both sides Tuesday, shaping future growth along this key corridor.

5. Sacramento council to vote on Sacramento Zoo expansion (kcra.com) — Sacramento residents could soon see the zoo grow, as the city council is set to vote next week on partnering for a two-part land expansion. Plans call for turning a 4-acre pony ride area into an education hub and adding nearly 1.5 acres of new exhibit space on the zoo’s north side.
