Capital Region Small Business Awards Head to Memorial Auditorium May 6 (riolindaonline.com) — Sacramento’s Memorial Auditorium will host the Capital Region Small Business Awards on May 6, spotlighting North Sacramento, North Highlands, McClellan, and nearby entrepreneurs. Local residents and business owners can network with county and state economic leaders, explore resources tailored to small businesses, and celebrate honorees like T & Y Market and other regional standouts.    

2. Sacramento animal shelter manager, accused of racism in LA, removed from role (sacbee.com) — Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter has removed operations manager Staycee Dains from her role amid ongoing community complaints, while Animal Care Services Director Phillip Zimmerman retired earlier than planned. The shakeup comes as several senior City Hall leaders depart and the new city manager pledges changes at the shelter following numerous resident emails and concerns.    

3. One week after Howe Park shooting, have there been any arrests? What to know (sacbee.com) — Sacramento County deputies are still investigating last weekend’s Howe Park shooting in Arden Arcade, and no arrests have been made yet, despite detaining several people in a vehicle of interest. Four young adults were wounded but are expected to survive. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the roughly 20 shots fired during the unauthorized gathering to call the Sheriff’s Office tip line.    

4. Former Sacramento councilman pleads guilty in Viva Supermarket fraud case (actionnewsnow.com) — A former Sacramento City Council member who owns the Viva Supermarket chain has pleaded guilty to multiple federal fraud and tax charges tied to his stores’ operations. Prosecutors say he underreported payroll, obstructed labor investigations, and misused COVID relief funds, while three Sacramento residents connected to the broader probe still face trial later this year. Sentencing is set for October 15.    

5. Sac State softball star Lafulafu Malepeai turns adversity into historic season (fox40.com) — Sacramento State softball standout Lafulafu Malepeai is powering a historic offensive season after battling a serious kidney disease that once threatened her career. With strong support from head coach Lori Perez and her faith, she’s now leading the Hornets on the field and inspiring young Polynesian athletes with her comeback story and new role on American Samoa’s national team.
