1. Could Waymo Be Coming To Sacramento? A Key Step Just Happened (patch.com) — Sacramento is now officially within Waymo's newly approved driverless ride territory after state regulators expanded the company's service area to 18 California counties. While Waymo has not set a launch date, the CPUC and DMV approvals clear key regulatory hurdles, allowing the company to roll out passenger service incrementally in Sacramento and other regions as it grows operations.
2. Sacramento Zoo welcomes 3 HeroRATs, unveils interactive habitat (fox40.com) — Sacramento Zoo visitors will soon be able to meet three new HeroRATs in a just-built interactive habitat near the African cheetah exhibit. Starting Thursday morning, the zoo will unveil the space, demonstrate the rats' scent-detection skills, and give the first 500 guests exclusive stickers while teaching about illegal wildlife trafficking and global conservation work.
3. Traffic deaths double during Fix 50 construction in Sacramento (kcra.com) — Traffic-related deaths in Sacramento's Fix 50 construction zone have more than doubled compared with the years before work began, with 23 fatalities through March plus two recent deaths. The 14-mile project between I-5 and Watt Avenue is expected to finish by the end of September, raising urgent safety concerns for local drivers and workers.
4. Celebrating National Multicultural Donor Awareness Month (westsacramentonewsledger.com) — Organ donation advocates and medical partners in the Sacramento region are being highlighted during National Multicultural Donor Awareness Month, with a special focus on communities of color. Sierra Donor Services and local nursing associations in Sacramento are working together to boost donor registrations and address health disparities, sharing powerful transplant stories and encouraging residents to register as organ and tissue donors.
5. Jonas Brothers coming to Sacramento's Golden 1 Center (kcra.com) — Sacramento music fans can see the Jonas Brothers at Golden 1 Center on November 22 as part of their 45-city "Burning Up Tour All Over Again." The tour follows sold-out Madison Square Garden shows and includes other California stops, with presale tickets opening August 18 and general sales starting August 21.
